Needed a new muffler on my 07, M35X went to several places who told me they couldn't help me out and I needed to go to the dealer. Went to dealer and was told the entire system was rusted out, which I believe. However, they want to replace everything including catalytic converters all the way back. Quoted me $3,700+ just for parts!!

Any ideas? I was told by a mechanic from another dealer (toyota) that they have replaced some infiniti exhausts and have issues with service engine lights if they replace the converters with aftermarket parts. Something about them not getting hot enough or getting too hot.

Don't want to put this much cash into my car but feel like I don't have a choice. Any suggestions would be helpful.

You shouldn't throw any check engine lights with replacing the catalytic converters. There are heated O2 sensors right before the catalytic converters but no other sensors after the cats.
Theoretically, I don't see why anything you do after that sensor will be trigger any codes. However, maybe having a true straight pipe means that exhaust gases don't stick around long enough for the sensors to get their readings correctly...and that's why a high flow catalytic converter might be a viable option.
There was a thread about high flow cats here recently, and iirc, the users who had them didn't report any I'll effects.

Long story short: No, you don't have to spend $3,700. Try Midas exhaust shops for a quote if you have them near you, or even try some of our members' classified ads... see if the g35 and 350z group has anything for you.
