Automobile and Road and Track editors are all whiners. They'll overlook a major positive aspect of a car because the find the interior too cheap. And to them, every interior is too cheap. Every car review you read "great car, luxurious, smooth ride, but the interior is cheap. Minus 20%!" or "Great handling, sporty feel, gobs of power, but the interior is too plasticy, minust 40%!" After their reviews, an excellent car sounds like crap because the center console isn't high quality enough. It's a bit overboard, I think. If there's any plastic at all, it's too cheap. Unless it's in a Toyota, a MB or a BMW, because their salaries are enhanced by them.
I spent a lot of time picking up magazines off the shelf before I decided which to subscribe to. Car and Driver is the only one worth reading for me. The only problem there is they don't know jack about trucks.
And yes, I miss the L-6 and L-8. A lot. But now that engines are shared so widely, and now that FF drivetrains are so standard, an engine has to be small enough for transverse mounting. If I were an auto maker, I'd make a straight six for my sports cars just to show that we care enough about the car to make it unique to the lineup.
