2006 Sentra, which transmission fluid?

A great resource for Nissan Sentra, Infiniti G20, 200sx, Pulsar, NX1600, NX2000, Tsuru, Primera and Sunny owners.

Hello folks,

Planning to change transmission fluid. FSM says, Nissan Matic-D type. I find it rather expensive, around $11 a quart, same on amazon as well as the local dealership.

I came across, https://www.walmart.com/ip/Valvoline-De ... ./15125787 and https://www.walmart.com/ip/Valvoline-Ma ... ./15125770 Can I use either of these?
or you would prefer any other (except OEM fluid)?

Just to confirm, I can use the same ATF as power steering fluid as well, right?

Thanks in advance.

I would stick with OEM fluid, Matic D in this case. Nissan tranny is a picky b****.
Use what's listed in the owners manual. a lot of times they'll list a substitute, such as a Honda manual tranny lists Honda MTF or 10w-30 oil... but the additives and such between the MTF and oil are different and its best to use the other fluid as a temporary deal.

Now being that DEX III/Mercon is also an ATF, if the manual lists that as an option then you should be fine running either long term. As a side note, check the back of some synthetic ATFs (amsoil, castellated, Valvoline, etc) and they'll list what specs they cover... a lot do matic J off of the top of my head (what the xterras use though they were superceeded by S).

I'm not sure if D was superceeded by another Matic or if its still current
We have an incredible SEARCH feature on this forum.
How to maintain 2006 Sentra for another 100,000 miles?

Thank you.
Since I had a specific question about the oil, I made a new topic. I searched actually, while everyone talks about the process, I didn't find anything specifically about these oils, or I missed. Plus, a rookie, better ask rather than making a stupid mistake.

Thanks again, will just bite the bullet and get Matic D fluid.

It's spring so it must be time to change transmission fluids! I just replied to a similar thread. Guy was curious about Valvoline MaxLife ATF. I checked his car specifications and those on the Valvoline website and they matched. The fluid did list Matic-D as well as J, K, S, and W. A couple of other uses chimed in with positive reviews since they have experience using it.

Thanks man, Appreciate specific information.
Just to be sure, we are talking about this one, right? https://www.walmart.com/ip/Valvoline-Ma ... ./15125770

One question, how can one product match specifications of all Nissan ATF fluids i.e. D, J, K, S and W. I assume, there are different designations because there is some difference in them? Apologies if the question sounds stupid but this is very new to me, trying to learn.

Yeah, that looks like the right stuff at Wally World. I think those are Nissan's transmission type designations, not necessarily fluid designations. That's how I read it anyway, I could be wrong.
