Hello All, Newbie here, recently purchased a 2006 Maxima SL and having a few issues. First, why does it always rev up to over 2,200K rpm when started, especially when cold? This is damaging to a cold engine (I can hear the valvetrain-knocking) and although the dealer said "Its normal" I don't believe it is. What can be done to make it idle lower when started? Already did the TPS, PPS and IAC relearn, and the throttle chamber is cleaned. I also hear a servo-like sound when it it idleing in a q quiet location and I give it a little gas and release it....is this normal?

Also, when using cruise-control going down long grades, the car lurches and seems to be accelerating/decelerating and not running smoothly. Can anyone help with these issues? Car only has 14kmiles on it and dealer isn't helping......can you also tell me if this engibe is supposed to have a very slight whine (turbo sounding) when accelerating hard? I know there are timing-tensioner issues with this car, but the dealer said they are fine with the mileage....sorry for the long post, I try to be as detailed as possible. Thanks!

I have an 07 that does have a pretty healthy cold-start idle blip that's around 2000. Mine also whines, but that may be my CVT.

Cruise control on downhill: keep in mind that sometimes CC tends to drop the throttle off in a jerky way....if the automatic transmission torque converter is locked up, then it normally would unlock when decellerating downhill, to prevent jerkiness. I would try to mimic the CC action by driving and decelerating on a downhill grade to see if it's doing the same thing. Since these cars use an electronic cruise control (not vacuum), there is nothing that the CC can do that your foot cannot do on the pedal.

The two issues have some common elements: TPS, PPS.....but, OTOH if idle is normal after warm up, and no codes are stored, then this may be pretty much normal.

The servo sound is probably the electronic engine mounts doing their thing.

If it were my car I would check for stored trouble codes, inspect it very carefully for anything like a vacuum leak or damaged wire on the intake manifold.

If there is a problem, it would be with a sensor that's on the edge of being out-of range....the quickest way to do this would be with the Consult code scanner the dealer techs use.

The more intensive method would be to measure/test individual sensors to see if their input/output values are within spec.

The quick, expensive, and wrong approach would be to start swapping parts.

Such an immediate high-idle can't be good for any engine. I was never really aware of it with my american cars, pretty much started and idled less then 900rpm, this thing flares right up to 23-2500rpm, can't be good for any motor, especially when cold. It actually wants to drive away without stepping on the gas....I have already checked (with a Modus scan tool) all parameters and codes, none present. At a loss at this point.

Seems weird that such a well designed engine would start so violently. I also get a slight exhaust or deep rumble when I first start out cold (driving in gear, not at idle)....goes away after a warm up and stays away as long as it doesn't get really cold again....dealer already did the "engine plate/sheild" TSB. but still there...do you get it?

I think you are right about the cruise-contol and lock-up attribute. Not a big deal. Thanks for your detailed reply.

the startup idle is normal, it slowly comes down as designed by much smarter than you engineers

the timing chain whine may be a problem however, take it to a different dealer and tell them about it

there is a TSB out to replaced the secondary timing chains and corresponding tensioners

It isn't the "smarter then me" engineers I am concerned wth, it's the "not so smart" dealers I have to deal with giving me bogus information, whom said, and I quote " I am not familiar with any timing chain/timing component issues with that engine, they are built well and we have never had a bad timing chain/tensioner come in this shop". Where are the engineers then?

NOW do you understand why I am asking the actual drivers out here these questions? I walked away shaking my head. I'll just drive it until the motor grenades and bring it in (before 60K of course) and then maybe they can find the problem.

It's truly scary that these (dealers) are so uneducated about how these vehicles work, and the issues that can develop. If I was as ignorant in my business, I would be out of business. Amazing.
