Hey All!

Long time watcher, first time poster!

I have a 2006 M45 that has served me well over the years and then I started letting my 16 year old son drive it. Aside from the fast food trash and gum wrappers that keep getting left in it, it started having some transmission codes popping up.

First it was 1762,1764 and 1759. I dropped the valve body and opened the TCM to make sure there were no broken terminal leads and I replaced the direct clutch solenoid while I was at it (1762, 1764). Put it back togther filled with new fluid and it actually ran and shifted great (maybe a little hard 1-2 shift?) for about 100 miles.

The other day it popped a 1757 code and would drive for maybe 15 seconds and shift until maybe 3rd gear and then it was like it went into neutral. I could turn the car on/off and it would repat the cycle. I had to tow it home and in the driveway it sits.

I had two thoughts, one is that I should have replaced all the solenoids in the first place as the new fluid probably moved some things around or there is a loose connection getting bounced around somewhere?

If the new solenoids are the way to go, does anyone have a preferred vendor as the kits I see on Amazon seem suspect. The direct clutch solenoid I replaced was with a brand new OEM Bosch, which I can get another 2 but cant find the other 3 vented solenoids anywhere new.

Any help anyone could provide would be GREATLY appeciated!

So for I dropped the throttle body and changed all the remaining solenoids and car seems to be driving good.

However, I was a little concerned how dirty the fluid was considering I just put 8 new quarts in…is that an indication of impending doom or just kinda the way it goes?

It only takes 10.9 dry, so you removed most of what was in there. New ATF is highly detergent and will quickly scrub all the varnish and clutch dust out of every corner. If you're not getting symptoms then chances are your internal seals and chamber walls are all good, so a small amount of newly-loosened crud probably isn't a big deal. To be safe, I'd give it another change after a few thousand to clean out the rest of it. If the old fluid was muddy then you actually lucked out. Often the crud is the only thing holding an old tranny together, and new fluid quickly turns the hydraulics into one giant pressure leak. When we find ATF soup on the stick, we generally tell customers it's safer to run it till it breaks.

Thnaks for the reply...I drove it around a bit more and I started hearing some whining (from the tranny I'm pretty sure) and it seemed like it started slipping a bit as well...the thing that is throwing me off is that it ran great, shifted smooth for about 50 miles and then started the same behavior...is this pretty typical of an M45 transmission on its way out?

I'm a little gun shy with it as I only have 1 tow left on my AAA if it goes out again, haha

Thanks again!

Old trannies of any kind are always a crapshoot when the fluid is poor, not just M's. There's simply no telling how much is left of the bands and clutches and how far gone the seals are. Fresh fluid is no panacea. If you start getting the same codes and a bottle of Lucas Tranny Fix doesn't help, you're probably SOL.
