FAILED #2 PISTON SENDING METAL THROUGH MOTOR ALSO METAL IN PAN MUST HAVE COMPLETE LONG BLCOCK. I'm shocked to have this issue this soon.
I am also shocked. Did you actually see the metal? I have had a valve tap noise several times on my 2004 M45 and it was just low on oil. Another thing that bothers me is the dealer told you need a long block. If it was just a piston a short block would be in order, not a complete long block. I am getting the feeling your dealer is scamming you. 81K is very low mileage for a total engine replacement.Moaawc wrote:2006 M45 81,000 miles I took it into the dealer due to the fact of hearing a tapping sound in the engine. I agree with Double E completely. When a piston, rod or lower bearing goes it makes some nasty bad noises well beyond a tap. His advice to you I consider right on. I would follow it. A compression check is an excellent way to go to see what is going on with that cylinder. He's also 100% correct about the crank case ventilation system. Before jumping into a new motor I would do exactly what Double E suggests. You also may want to contact Szh. He is the moderator of this forum, has a wealth of knowledge and also a brain trust of highly certified techs he can tap into. My OP is something just not seems right with what the dealer told you.Double E wrote:I echo Myother. If it's really sending metal in the pan, there's more than a tapping going on. The bottom end of the piston has broken or the piston has a hole in it from detonation or an item caused it to damage the piston top. I'd want to see the metal, view the bore scope and do a compression check. Probably in that order.
I've had the same tapping due to low oil. Low oil because the system for crank case ventilation is poorly engineered.
