2006 M45 81,000 miles I took it into the dealer due to the fact of hearing a tapping sound in the engine. Dealer told me I have a
FAILED #2 PISTON SENDING METAL THROUGH MOTOR ALSO METAL IN PAN MUST HAVE COMPLETE LONG BLCOCK. I'm shocked to have this issue this soon.

Sorry to hear the bad news... It's not so soon either, it's a 7 year old car (or 8 depending on in service date) the 06/07 M45 are in fact more prone to engine problems :frown:

Hmmm, having lost a rod bearing in another (non-infiniti) vehicle, I can tell you it is an expensive process to do a good job with an engine swap. A quick check of car-part.com shows that complete units are pricey for the miles...

you should consider a few options:
1) a complete vehicle to use for a swap
2) check prices for rebuilding. With some performance pistons...
3) stop driving it, put in some heavy weight oil and drop it off at a dealer for a trade...

I wish I had done the latter when I had my engine problems...

I am also shocked. Did you actually see the metal? I have had a valve tap noise several times on my 2004 M45 and it was just low on oil. Another thing that bothers me is the dealer told you need a long block. If it was just a piston a short block would be in order, not a complete long block. I am getting the feeling your dealer is scamming you. 81K is very low mileage for a total engine replacement.

Just my OP. But I would seek a second opinion. Regardless I hope you get if fixed and get back on the road.

I echo Myother. If it's really sending metal in the pan, there's more than a tapping going on. The bottom end of the piston has broken or the piston has a hole in it from detonation or an item caused it to damage the piston top. I'd want to see the metal, view the bore scope and do a compression check. Probably in that order.

I've had the same tapping due to low oil. Low oil because the system for crank case ventilation is poorly engineered.

I agree with Double E completely. When a piston, rod or lower bearing goes it makes some nasty bad noises well beyond a tap. His advice to you I consider right on. I would follow it. A compression check is an excellent way to go to see what is going on with that cylinder. He's also 100% correct about the crank case ventilation system. Before jumping into a new motor I would do exactly what Double E suggests. You also may want to contact Szh. He is the moderator of this forum, has a wealth of knowledge and also a brain trust of highly certified techs he can tap into. My OP is something just not seems right with what the dealer told you.

Had same issue before on my car immediately after beating on it hard. Drove it home (3 minute driving). Let it sit for 10 minutes and it was gone. It was low on oil and I also have an M45 which I believe burns more oil than an M35. I learned the hard way by almost giving me a heart attack.

Check the oil level, if its low or not at full, fill it till it gets full.

I had the same problem that would go away, it happened about a total of 6 times always after driving somewhat aggressively. One time the ticking would not got away and resulted in an engine replacement from an 08. I had no warranty.
