Hello all,
So my wife and I just got back from vacation, went to our car in the airport lot, and guess what... the keys were not in her purse! Uh oh! Thankfully we have some great neighbors and had one of them go into our house to grab the spare set and come out to the airport. It looked like all was going to be well. Unfortunately the spare keyfob wouldn't unlock the car. We thought no problem, we will just pull the real key out of the back of the keyfob to get into the car and I remembered a guy at the dealer showed me how to put the keyfob into a slot in the car and then when I hit the push button, it should start. Well, after we got into the car and put the keyfob in the slot, we got a message on the dash that said, "Key ID: NO" So, I can only assume this means that fob is not paired with the car.

I quickly Googled how to pair it only to find it has to be paired with a Consult II pc. Out neighbor gave us a ride home, but now we are trying to figure out what to do about getting the car. Can the dealer program the key without the car? Or I wonder if they would come out to the lot with us to program it if they need the car.

Anyone have the details on how it is done and if it can be done without the car? I'm sure they have the VIN in their records... maybe it is programmed with that?

Thanks,
Doug

If the FOB needs to programmed to the vehicle, then yes they need to be together. It's kinda like Bluetooth pairing, the two have to be within close proximity to pair up.

Unless your dealership offers super outstanding service, you'll probably have to tow the vehicle to the dealership.

Or you can look up a good experience mobile locksmith that can come out and program it for you.

Simply going off what I know about the local mobile locksmiths in my area, I'd say no to that idea. Locksmiths in your area might be able to do this, but I'd want proof beforehand.

If you've got AAA, see what the distance is for towing to a repair shop. My Dad recently had them tow a vehicle about 80 miles, at no charge. Infiniti shops will soak you to program the FOB, so I'd call a couple of nearby Nissan dealerships, as they can do it, and may not be much more than having a locksmith do it. Even if the locksmith quotes $60 and the Nissan shop says $90, it may be worth the extra as you'll know it will work correctly.

Sounds to me like the battery in the spare is dead, definitely a cheaper place to start...

I forgot to mention the slot for keys with low batteries. Did you try putting the fob in there? I don't know if it would work with a completely dead battery, as mine never works even with a low battery. I'm pretty sure the dealership forgot to reconnect it after changing the key control unit. Regardless, if that worked, then you wouldn't even need to find a FOB battery right away and could just be on your way (cheaper still). On a related note, the battery is a CR2025 per the manual and the factory battery, but a CR2035 works per several members. They provide the same voltage, the latter is just thicker.

That's what it was!... Thankfully!

I hope this thread helps someone else someday. I assumed it wasn't paired since it wouldn't work when we put the fob in the slot. I thought the dealership told me when the battery in the fob is dead, use the slot to start the car, but that obviously didn't work for us. Or maybe it only works with a weak battery. Anyway, at least we got it solved.

Thanks,
Doug
