Hello all,
I've noticed increased noise coming from the front of the car. The steering is "loose" and it feels like it wants to get away from me and over bumps. Steering wheel shakes quite a bit. I had my tires rotated and balanced and replaced the passenger side wheel hub.

Still no difference.

I'm also getting this funny smell from time to time. Like some fluid is burning. No lights as of yet and oil lvl looks good.

My mechanic said he saw some leaking coming from my rack and advised that is the cause of my problem. (188k miles)

I'm thinking hes right but wanted to bounce it off you good people.
If hes right has anyone had experience with Cardone reman racks?

Specifically Part Number: 26-3048. I cant post urls yet.

Welcome to the forum!

Yeah, I would say at 188kmi it's probably a good guess.

I replaced the original rack in my old CRV with a Cardone reman hardware from PartsGeek.com. My understanding was the original Honda racks, and quite possibly the Nissan racks too, as they seem to have the same problems, did not have a stainless sleeve inside the cylinder and the aluminum would wear prematurely, causing leaks at the O-rings as the tolerances increased. The remanufactured parts are actually superior to an original-style part as they have a stainless sleeve.
So I hear...
Mine is leaking a bit and groans when turning right when cold, so I have no doubt a replacement is soon on the agenda for me, too.

Check your tie rods though. My project Alfa had terrible steering slop when I bought it (manual rack) and simply replacing the tie rods and ends totally solved the problem. Replaced ball joints and bushings while I had the front end disassembled. It's the best handling car I've ever driven, and I haven't even done the rear DeDion or replaced shocks, yet.

Don't forget the alignment, afterward, if you DIY it.
