Hi - I'm a new owner - 2006 15k miles loaded M35X and absolutely love this auto. It's incredible.

My only issue with it (other than the headlights which I knew weren't the best) is the CD player which occasionally refuses to play a Cd upon loading and not the same Cd each time or even the same type of CD.

I've tried regular commercial CDs - CD-Rs that I've created both with the usual audio formats and mp3 formats and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to why it gives me the error "Disc Read Error" and then won't play the CD.

I can come back to the car 1/2 hour later, take out the "bad" cd, reinsert it and everything's fine but then another Cd that was playing fine earlier won't play.

I read in the manual that CD-R discs might cause problems but that doesn't say anything about the problems with regular commercial CDs.

Any ideas anyone? I've not yet contacted the dealer because I wanted to be somewhat informed before doing so.

Thanks!

Welcome to NICO!

Certainly sounds like one of two possibilities:

1. The CD player could need cleaning. The dealer can do this, or you can try a cleaning disk (from many audio and electronics places).

2. The player could be bad. In which case, you have a warranty problem to be dealt with the dealer.

One thing I was not clear on: did you have any problems with normal CD audio disks? I.e., not ones that you recorded, but store-bought audio disks in the standard Red-book format? Because you said "commercial CD", but continued in the very same sentence and phrase with "- CD-Rs that ..."

If you are only experiencing difficulty with disks that you have written (whether Red-book audio disks or mp3 formats), then this may be an issue with the writer you have, or the specific mftr of the CD-R you are using etc. Tough to diagnose this, unless you see a specific pattern.

Thanks for your advice. The problems are totally random - every kind of disc (including "normal" audio CDs) sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

Now the good news. I spoke with the dealer today and they very quickly offered to order a new Cd player which they will install when it comes in. That's my first interaction with the repair department and they hit a home run with it. Asked a couple of questions and then just told me that they'd order the part - no muss, no fuss.

Thanks!

I have a new G37 S coupe and have a bad CD player . I have the Bose Studio on wheels with the Hard Drive based Nav and Music box to which I have ripped 4 CD's before the player went belly up (Disc Read Error)I tried a commercial cleaning disc (Maxell) but no go....it didnt work.

My question (which the service dept cant answer yet) is...do they have to replace the entire audio system (including the Nav system hard drive etc) or can they just replace the CD player. I would like to think they could just swap out the CD player...i dont want to have to load all the CD's again (takes a long time for 40+discs!)

I would think since the nav system relies on the hard drive that the CD player would be an easily replaceble item....without having to change out the entire music system...Any thoughts?
