I recently purchased a 2006 M35 with 20K miles. There is what I consider an excessive amount of wind noise at speeds above 45. I just came back from the dealer and they told me it is normal for this car. Has anyone else has similar experiences?Thanks

Measure the noise frequency and amplitude as car mags do and compare to other vehicles with same tires on same roads.

Usually worn tire or substituted tire noise.

You can't get anywhere without scientific documentation.

"what I consider an excessive amount of wind noise at speeds"

Kind of late after you test drove and purchased the vehicle. There are no acoustic specifications for the car. Some magazine test numbers but they are not warrantable.

You could try cleaning, and applying the silicon lube stuff the the door seals; for what it costs it may solve your problem; if nothing else, it will make the seals last longer.

The M35x I have is quieter than my MB ML330CDI for road noise (The MB is also 1 year newer with half the KM's); tires make a big difference also; I assume you have moved onto a new set as my 06 used up its tires at the end of last years, yours most be close to done or replaced already, that may be helpful to know what kind you have now

Also; check brake wear, you may be hearing that; but most people can tell the difference easy on those; tire noise seems to confuse some people for wind (more than average anyways)

I once had a car that I heard a metal grinding sound when applying the brakes, after two brake jobs (under warranty) and a bunch of suspension stuff being replaced, it turned out to be the tires, some defect of design that the bead near the rim on slowing would vibrate the tire/rim/suspension when the tire became a little older and sounded literally like metal; after 2 years of complaints, I replaced the tires due to wear, and found the issue went away; GM later paid me back 50% of the costs of the tires, and created a service advisory for it.

Stranger things happen, but hopefully this gets you looking at the issue a little different; service people cant spend too much time sometimes on these as they just dont have it to spare;, so working it yourself may be helpful; start with the silicon stuff for the door seals; parts departments all over sell it (dealers for sure, nit sure about the other kinds of parts stores).

also take one of the cars they have out for a drive on a road you drive and see if that is the same;

Good luck;tk

This is the very reason I'm planning on a "courtesy test drive" with the 08M35 before making the final decison. I want to take an extensive drive at highway speeds as well as city to determine these very factors. Most people just go around the block a few times and then find out issues later on. It's a big investment....... why not a long drive? I've heard numerous comments on road noise with the M which usually more than anything is tire noise. If a substantial car like the M has considerable wind noise..... something is not right. I'm curious myself and will check it out soon.
