My wife's car (2006 M35) recently started making some odd noise that seems to be speed-variable and right under us. At speed, it feels and sounds like a high vibration or very fine grinding (if that makes any sense). I noticed there was a SES light on, so I grabbed my phone and bluetooth OBD adapter to pull it:

C1500 - Chassis

Searching the code online shows a generic transfer case contact plate error (A or B side), or cam timing (both sensors have recently been replaced)

The car runs fine, 177K miles, no recent major work. It's just the noise that worries me. Any help or insight would be appreciated. The car is a sport model, it is not an AWD model.

Thank you!

Welcome to the forum.

My guess is you're on the right track with the transfer case plate something or other (although I have no experience there) and it's not cam timing (which would be in the engine). If the sound is under you, I'd start with transfer case.

That being said, never seen or even heard of that code before. Someone else may be able to assist.

Thank you!

Forum is great - all of a sudden I want to do coilovers and a full exhaust on her car!

It just seems weird to me that a non awd model would throw transfer case codes, so I'm leaning towards it being very generic. What I'll probably do is take it to my trusted guy on Friday. She has a real bad habit of letting me know that things are wrong far after it's a problem. I don't drive it much, but last year I got in it - and it rattled like crazy - turns out it was so low on oil the noise was the timing chain bouncing around. She told me that sounds means it's time to tell me to do an oil change. HA.

It's a great car, and the fact she hasn't killed it yet just underscores how tough it is. Hoping for a relatively simple fix - will report back when I know. Thanks guys!

Wives...I just popped the question and although my lady lets me enjoy my bike and my cars, she doesn't know the first thing about em so I may be looking at the same situation lol.

Turns out it was 2 bad front wheel bearings - belts were also shot on an unrelated note. $880 later and it's nice and quiet. Thanks guys!
