Getting ready to change mine....can I use 75w-90 GL-5 synthetic fluid with a limited slip additive already added? I already have it at home and wonder if it would provide a little more protection or not?
Thoughts?

Done. After 48k and 13 years it wasnt black but it flowed more like a motor oil than a gear oil. Glad Its changed.

Mobil 1 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Oil is what I always used on my cars ... it is an excellent gear oil for our differentials.

They also have a 140W-90 Synthetic, but I have not used it. Should not matter, I would think.

Also, A bit of overkill, but I always changed the differential gear oil at 30k miles - about 2 years of driving for me.

I dont believe any M's have the limited slip diff like the sport G37's did. They should all be basic open diffs, so no limited slip modifier would be needed.

75W-90 is perfect though.

When it comes to new fluids (brake, diff, gearbox) I always use the dealer. Three reasons:
If they do it wrong or brake something, it's on them, not me.
These fluids get changed so infrequently, why not pay a few dollars extra to keep the fluids OEM?
I can't be bothered with the mess and cleanup / disposal after.
