Pass side low beam had died.
Ordered a matching pair of philips H1 bulbs from Amazon.
Removed the wheel, and the guard. Removed the bulb (the retaining work clip gave a little resistance), the offending bulb had gone black at the glass metal junction.
Pushed the new lamp in the socket, connected the wire, engaged the retaining clip (it gave a little problem, the bulb was wobbly until the pin was sitting right) and turned on the lights
The passenger side bulb did not light up.....
What steps should I take to trouble shoot?
I have the 2008 M35 service Manual (downloaded few months ago from this site).
My knowledge to decipher/trouble shoot electrical problems is rudimentary but I have access to a mechanic who could if I provided him the right info.
I appreciate all the help I can get from the experts in the forum
Thank you!

Welcome to the forum.

If driver side is working, move that bulb over to the passenger side. If passenger side is now working, you have one DOA bulb and should handle that with the merchant (I recommend TheRetrofitSource.com for their customer service and their Morimoto H1 bulb). If it's still not working, you have a wiring issue...which will make things tougher to troubleshoot.

Where/how much did you buy the bulbs for? If it was anything less than what TRS sells their for, you bought cheap stuff and I'm not surprised one of them is dead. Many places on eBay/Amazon sell knocks off...TRS is one of the only places that sells true genuine Phillips, Osram, etc. bulbs that aren't knock offs or re-based.

Note: I don't work for TRS (I work in IT for a software company and moderate here lol). I just buy from them a lot. I've been in the HID/retrofit game a while (for personal use) and that's the only place I trust.

Also, you could check your fuses in addition to the bulbs. If the bulb had turned black, maybe it shorted the circuit and blew a fuse.

Generic advice that might help others, or even you if you have to replace the bulbs again:
Before snapping everything back in place and buttoning it up, I usually just plug in the harness connector and leave the bulbs dangling somewhere and go to test the switch. That way I dont have to disassemble too much while troubleshooting.

I do the same.

I apologize for not acknowledging your immediate and helpful responses.
Thank you all for,the helpful suggestions.
Edbwoy, your diagnosis was on the mark. It was the fuse. It took some time to figure out that I will have to remove the battery to access the fuses! One I replaced the 15 amp fuse, the problem was solved. Thanks a million Edbwoy, your knowledge, experience, intuitions and eager to help nature makes you a unique person.

Similar situation. My driver side low beam went out. bought new bulbs, worked for a week or so then it went out again. replaced fuses and still no luck. I a**/U/ME its the headlamp control unit. need to find one on ebay or something because a brand new one is like $400+. I'm currently wrapping my hood and roof for about $600 w/labor and to make myself and my wallet feel better I try to spend under 1k in one shot when doing my improvements on my car lol.
