I agree with msvara. The 45's seem to have engine problems much more often than do the 35s. One of the most common seems to be excessive oil loss between changes (1-2 quarts).
I've never driven a 45, but I have driven the 56 and I have to say that although it is technically more powerful, it's not a HUGE difference. My 35 has plenty of power for everyday driving and also for the times I want spirited driving. Handling and stability is no different in the 35 Vs 56. You won't out run BMW or Mercedes off a red light, but I can't be bothered with that kind of silly competition anyway. If you need to pass someone on the motorway, or just want to flat out drive mad-fast, the 35 is plenty suited to do that.
135k miles is not a huge issue if the car has been cared for and all maintenance was performed (and not with 'almost as good as required' parts). Specific things to check would be spark plugs, all suspension parts, steering links, belts, and a confirmation that the gear box and diff have been flushed recently. Since this is a small local car shop, I don't know how much info you will be able to get aside from a carfax.
