Hi Folks,

I'm looking to trade in my 2001 Qx4 with 145k for a 2006 G35x. The car I'm looking at has 88k, Red, and most options less Navigation...asking $12k. I've done some reading/searching regarding pre-purchase, and found something new to me that I was previously unaware about on the VQ35DE----Leaky valve covers? I don't see a recall about it which isn't surprising, but my main question is would you walk away if cylinder plug #6 (or others) have oil on them? Or is this pretty much a problem that won't affect driveability and long-term reliability? I'd likely be keeping the car up to around 150,000 miles (2-3 years) so if it's not a major concern then I probably would just leave it alone until I sell it.

Other than that, if YOU were buying a 2006 G35x with 88k what would you be looking for and what questions would you ask? I know the basics of cars but I'm looking to find out any common issues directly related to the VQ35 and 05/06 G35x It has no reported accidents/clean title and is a 2 owner car. The dealership is about a 6 hour drive from me, so I'm trying to gather as much information as possible before making the drive in case it's not worth it. I'm hoping to get around $4 to 5K for my Qx4 and then offer another 5-6k in cash for the G35x. Any help is much appreciated, and I'm looking forward to "hopefully" being a new owner.

Thank You

Evan

I just got rid of my 06 G35 last Friday with almost 172k miles
In my opinion driving 6 hours just to look at a vehicle makes no sense to me
My G used oil from day one. About a quart every 1500 to 2k miles.
I only got $5k on a trade in but it would have needed brakes very soon , had a leaking differential seal, and some rear bumper damage.
Just keep in mind that parts for an Infiniti can be very expensive.

My advise save money until you can afford a new one that comes with all new parts and a warranty and doesn't require a 12 hour round trip

Good luck

I've had very good luck with Infiniti so far...I've owned 2 different 2001 Qx4's over the last 3 years and put a total of about 70,000 miles together and have put a grand total of <$200 in parts other than average wear. I'm sure I'm in the luckier part of the group, and this G35 obviously carries a higher parts price tag than the Pathfinder in Infiniti badges that I've been driving. They've both devoured oil from day one, at least a quart every 1k or so. I have the funds outright purchase a new g37, but I just can't bring myself to spend that kind of money...and eat that kind of depreciation---especially since I get bored of the same car after 3 years or so. I've considered leasing as well, but just paying for the depreciation and then walking after 3 years is even worse in my opinion.

I might be in the minority here, but I actually like the cosmetic styling on the 2006 g35 more than I do the 07+. It's worth it to me to drive that 6 hours since I've spent the last few months looking for a red/black one that's priced under $14k and this is pretty much the best one I've seen so far. Although the thought of driving 6 hours and finding out that the car isn't what it's been described to be is sickening to me. Am I'm crazy to buy a car with 88k on it already?...I bought both Qx4s with 10X,000 miles and had such good luck that maybe it's brainwashed me into thinking that higher mileage is worth the $2-$3k in savings. One thing that I am sincerely worried about is the oil consumption...if the previous owners didn't pay attention to the level they could have been 2-3 quarts short at every oil change...and there's pretty much no way of knowing outside of already terminal damage.

This dealership offered my $3,000 for my Qx4 with 145k, so after some haggling I'd hope to escape at no more than $7500 in cash for that g35x but with the concerns about oil consumption and other higher mileage worries maybe I should reconsider. My Qx4 is on the verge of needing some serious lunch money drained into it, so if I decide to keep it over winter I'd be looking at around $500 just to get to Spring.

The way around the depreciation hit is to purchase outright and keep the vehicle for at least 5 to 6 years. I've kept new purchased vehicles for as long as 17 years.
Automobile technology is moving so fast now that if you want the latest and greatest bells and whistles upgrading every 5 or 6 years is not too bad of a hit especially if you pay cash. I took the 1.9% financing and will attempt to pay off the balance within a year or so. $500 is not so much to spend to keep your vehicle going while you save up a little more money to throw towards a new one

06 G35 saying hello to my new G37
New G37 saying goodby to my old 06 G35 last Friday

The dealer wanted to charge me $100 for new wheel locks
I was too cheap to spend another cent so I took them off my old G35 and put them on my new G37.
