K this is my first attempt at this. Iam trying to figure out what is going on with my 06 G35 transmission I took it in to have the transmission looked at because it seemed to need to change into another gear at around 40mph and up speeds. I shifted it out manually to fifth gear then switched it over to automatic and RPMS stay the same. So My question is should I see a diiference in RPM's when I go from manual 5th gear to drive in auto mode. I dont use the manual mode was just using to see any difference. It just feel s that it should be changing out into another gear like maybe overdrive.
P.S. Iam a female just trying to get some answers, so forgive the way I have attempted to explain this problem. THE SERVICE DEPT TOLD ME IT WAS ALL FINE>
Thanks

5th gear is the highest gear for the transmission, its the same no matter if it Manual mode or regular. Manual mode just always you to select when the car will shift into the next gear, doesn't change gear ratios or anything.

The manual mode doesn't change the transmission - just allows you to control the shifts. RPMs will only change when switching between gears. If you were manually in 4th gear and swapped over to D then it should kick into 5th gear and rpms will drop.

There is also a lock out on the top left side of the shift indicator plate. If you do not like using the manual mode, have the dealer lock it out for you.

I personally love the manul mode on the twisties.....=)

There should be no change. Overdrive is just a term used for the top gear and with a ratio smaller than 1.0. This car has an OD gear And it is fifth gear. Check out your manual or go online and do a little research.

When u say that at 40+ mph the car shifts, do you mean it shifts up (Rpms down) or down (rpms up)? Your car has a locking torque converter and that can seem like a small gear shift since the torque converter will lock and you'll stop slipping it.

Also jaywalker is a little misinformed. The "lockout" he is referrng to is actually a shift lock release. This has nothing to do with what he thinks it is. And it doesn't seem like he even knew what u were asking lol.

Personally, I think it's a little marketing gimmick. My pathfinder has a 4 speed auto with overdrive.....

So we can say both my pathfinder and the G has a:

5 sp Auto or a 4 sp with overdrive....

Which one you think sounds better for marketing?

I was hoping that the 2004 G would have a 5 spd with od gear i.e. 6 total gears but of course you have to get the 7 spd auto whenever yr that is. Was really surprised that at 70mph cruising, the rpm was about 2400-2500. Definitely if we have another gear at the top to lower the rpm, to around 2200 rpm or less at 70 mph cruising, would definitely see considerably better highway fuel econ. I think the engine definitely has enough power to take a higher top gear ratio for cruising. What that mean though is that the G may not actually reach top speed not in top gear... sorta like the corvette with its tall od top gear... It's the way for manufacturers to "cheat" and get better fuel eco so we don't end up paying gas guz tax....Tben again the G has a spd limiter so you dont even reach redline in 5th gear right now anyway in auto....

Can anyone with 7 sp auto tell me whats the rpm for their cruising spd at say around 70-80 mph?

Patherfinder is just a 4spd though, the OD is included in those 4 gears.

On the shifter panel you will only see 1, 2, D and then OD is the push button on the shifter.

So I was just wondering about everybody else's car.

My 2006 G35x Auto running at 110km/h|70mph has its RPMs around 2600-2800.

Is that normal?
I was checking today and there's no overdrive button.

I love/hate this car.

My tank costs me about $85. I give it the good 91 stuff, but here in Toronto it works out to $1.41/litre so basically $5.60/gallon.

Yes that's normal, it has 5 gears, the highest one is the overdrive.
