Hi I just bought a 2006 Frontier SE (manual) with 130,000mi.

It's been babied by 2 previous owners (both over 50s-60s), complete with all the maintenance and repair records since it came off the lot.

Rides like a new truck, lots of power, no leaks burning etc.

There are three noises I have began to notice (I did not notice them while test driving).

1) The first is rattle upon startup, and when I turn the truck off. You know that distinct sound of a old large diesel motor when you turn it off? That diesel rattle, mixed with a bit of exhaust rattle noise, is what I hear upon starting/shutting off the truck.

2) The second noise is what sounds like ticking lifters, that are barely perceptible on idle and that peak around 2000rpms. If I stay under 2000rpms and somewhat under-rev the truck, I can't really hear them (they are still there, just pretty muted).

3) The third is a erratic, clunking, thunking, thudding, that seems to show itself upon startup and once in a while on idle. It is almost like someone is taking a rubber mallet and hitting something low and far back in the engine compartment. I can feel this better than I can hear it, through the stick shift while I am in neutral, just with my hand on the stick. It is erratic, and not consistent with a random pattern. At first, it sounded like I had the ebrake on, and the truck was creeping down a hill one 1/4in at a time.

Unfortunately, I did not find receipts for the timing chain/guides. However, I can't really hear a whine.... there COULD be some extra noise indicative of this, but I haven't heard any other nissan frontiers to compare (and I'm new to the truck).

I took video of both issues.

The first video is of the ticking/rattling and some noise from the timing chain cover.

The second video is of the thudding/thumping (noise 3 I described above)

Both are in playlist below:

First video of ticking/rattling in case you are on mobile and can't see playlists:

Are you useing a Geniune Nissan Oil Filter? Best to use a Nissan OiL Filter.

Has the PCV Valve ever been changed? Might be a good idea.

What Oil Viscosity and Type are you useing,, as well as your Region Location?

If it were mine,, I would take it to Nissan or a Trusted Reputable Mechanic and see what they think or if they can find anything loose under or connected to the Engine or Exhaust.

No oil leaks anything to indicate pcv valve but probably a good idea....

5W-30 synthetic with a quart of lucas synthetic treatment (just changed today). The filter is not oem nissan.

Whats the deal with nissan filters? Just better quality or is there something else here I'm missing?

I've been told, long ago to only use a Nissan Filter with Nissan Vehicle's.

I got burned year's ago,, by not useing an OEM Filter with a Kawasaki Motor bike. I didn't know why the oil pressure dropped into the red when brakeing hard. Went back to a Kawasaki Filter and instantly solved the problem,, but the damage was done,, and had to eventually get a top overhaul done.

I drove a '93 hardbody for 20 year's,, and when I sold it with 176K mile's the little engine was still purring like a kitten, and was very quiet. I alway's used a Nissan Oil Filter with that Truck. A New '13 Frontier replaced the '93,, and I only use a Nissan Oil filter in it as well.

I'm pretty sure there are some filter's that are as good as a Nissan Oil Filter,, but I've not seen a list of them put out by Nissan. The Nissan Filter will cost a little bit more,, but not much, and I get mine online,, which make's the cost a non issue for me.

There are also plenty of Oil Filter's that are not as good as a Nissan Filter,, so for me,, it's just not worth the risk. Plus,, I try to keep my Truck, for a long time,, so it's one thing less that I need to think about, as far as trying to make my Truck last as long as possible.

So today I pulled up close to a wall so I could hear #3 sound better. Anyone watch the original Absentminded Professor? With the green flubber? Remember how his flying car sounded? lol

Anyways, sound immediately disappears when I depress the clutch.
HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
That makes me think it is a problem with the.... I dunno. Any ideas? Is there a shaft that spins while in neutral?

Anyone have a listen to video #1 ? Any thoughts on that noise?
