Heres a pic of a 2006 Q45 shift knob I put in my 1990, The install is pretty simple.Once the stock knob was removed I cut about .25 inch off of the the little rod that the button on the original shift knob depressed. From there I simply depressed the rod down fully so that its always engaged and the shift lock is off and screwed the new knob on,The threads match perfectly.I guess the only problem I could see would be that you could accidentally throw the car in reverse while on the freeway however I think the TCU wouldnt ever let that happen(then again Ive never had the balls to test it).Ive got the wooden ashtray and shifter bezel off of a 94-96 that matchs perfectly that Im going to throw on as soon as I get up in the rafters to go through my Q45 parts as soon as I do Ill post new pics.

Looks very nice.

The Corvette has the button as well, and there are some kits out there, that allow the entire knob to be pressed down to engage the release. I wonder if that could be applied to the Q?

I like it. Can't tell from the photo, is it woodgrain? So that knob doesn't have a button at all?

With the channel that the gear shifter moves through, it'd be hard to knock it into reverse while driving.

Yep its woodgrain, as a matter of fact its the same type of wood grain in the 94-96 Q45's. And yes, it has no button.I agree it probably would be pretty hard to throw it into reverse but as I stated before Im pretty sure the transmission control unit would overide the signal and not allow it(anybody know about this?).Besides Ive actually had this shift knob in my other Q(walnut instead of rosewood) for a few years now and never had any issues.

I like th elooks/idea, but I'd like to see if someone can find a kit like Jeff mentions, that allows you to keep the button functionality.

I guess I'm just a scaredy cat about it being knocked into or even out of gear .

So how did you fix it that you can change the gear without a button?

I take from his post, that he modified the threads (cut them down) on the top of the shifter column, so with the new shift knob screwed down it holds the button in all the time.

No,No, Its actually much easier than you think. Your oem knob screws on to a threaded tube that has a solid rod that runs down the middle. I simply cut about a quarter inch off of the rod. I guess if I wanted to change it back it would be pretty easy, I would pack or fill the button with something to compensate for the 1/4 inch I cut off. But after what my shift knob looked like after 15 years I doubt I would do that. Im acually looking for a matching steering wheel on ebay. The cruise control buttons would match up fine, however the volume, speach recognition etc I would keep and wire up to control Subwoofer volume, Nos activation switch and who knows what else.
