So I recently purchased a 2005 QX56 from a local independent dealer, 107k miles on it. It Had some minor stuff (HVAC actuator clicking, driver side seat back clips broken, 2 trim pieces misaligned) the price was good and the powertrain looked and felt great. Was given the go ahead to take it on my own test drive sans dealership sales person. Beat on it, tried all the systems etc. and aside from the earlier stuff everything was great. Fast forward a week and I had an SES come on after sitting in traffic for 6 hours, with a short break after 4 hours when I stopped to let traffic die down. SES was still there on restart, stopped at auto parts store since I didn't have a scanner, after waiting for half an hour for the damn thing I just went home. Next morning we go to the in laws about 20 minutes away, wife drives since I wanted her to get used to it, fires up fine and drives normally. After hanging out for an hour or so at the in laws we go to leave and it doesn't start. It will make a nice healthy cranking noise forever, but it won’t catch. There is a fuel smell after a few cranks and every now and then it will sound like it ignited on 1 cylinder. I didn't have a spark plug socket or extensions (haven't together a tool kit for this vehicle yet, figured I had at-least a couple weeks lol) so I haven’t pulled a plug to check for fuel soak yet / spark yet. I remember from my digging an IPDM issue which I ran across time and time again when researching. So I went ahead and bit the bullet and got the latest revision IPDM from a Nissan Dealer through eBay, $290 a week after purchase was annoying but it’s a quick fix. WRONG. I plugged the IDPM up, slotted it back into its spot (although the passenger side clip won’t seat 100% for some reason) and turned the key over... no ignition. I bought a scan tool since apparently they aren't loaned out anymore, so $60 later I pull the code, its P0174 (Fuel Injection System Too Lean Bank 2). That’s it, all the emission stuff showed cleared. So I cleared the codes and went back to the drawing board. I have a Cam and crank shaft sensor coming tomorrow, figured for $30 it was worth replacing those along with the IPDM. I was going to run some MAF cleaner on the MAF, and put the cam and crank sensors in this weekend. I have a PWI Inc. 3mo / 5k mi powertrain included, but since I doubt it’s something internal to the powertrain I’m hesitant to turn it over to a mechanic if it’s not covered. SO I'm curious where to go from here, obviously dropping the tank is the next step, but I’m REALLY hoping to avoid that since it’s on a decent driver side leaning incline and on gravel, so getting the tank out is going to be very unpleasant.
TL;DR - title.
So to recap we have:
- healthy battery
- healthy starter
- high likelyhood of fuel moving to the engine
- a new ze03c IPDM
- 1/2 tank of fuel showing on the gauge (about 12 gallons by mileage estimation)
- P0174 Fuel Injection System Too Lean Bank 2
- Ordered new camshaft position sensor
- Ordered new crankshaft position sensor
My next steps are to install cam and crank sensor and blow out / clean MAF. I did unplug the MAF and see if it started like that, no joy so I doubt its MAF related. suspect fuel system at this point, but unsure where to go with diagnostic so I might have to risk seeing how strong this third party warranty is if they’ll let me take it to the stealership or one of the two shops I remotely trust around me.
