Well the timing chain on my 2005 Quest is now clacking and making a very loud noise vice the whine. I am assuming that the slack side guide has broken at the top and slid down, like we have seen happen before.

I am looking at doing the entire job myself and will replace the main timing chain, all the guids for it, the tensioner and also the water pump, whil I am at it.

Is there a good process to follow for doing this without removing the motor? Also any tricks/tips learned would be great.

Also can you replace the main timing chain without messing up the timing? It seems to me that if you mark everything you should be able to just put the new chain on once the top and slack guides are removed. Is my assumption correct or just wishful thinking?

All feedback and tips are very much appreciated.

Thanks.

If you mark everything, you have a better than 50/50 chance of getting it right. Slightly better. Plan for the worst though. Seems like I saw a couple of decent videos on youtube about this as this same engine is also in other vehicles. You do NOT have to take the engine out, but you DO have to take off a bunch of stuff on that side and it is just time consuming. I thought about doing it, but I just didn't want to mess with it..

You're doing it the right way if you are keeping the car. I had mine done professionally a few months back and the engine drives and sounds like new and I'm at 140K - this engine will probably go 250-300K. Mine had the 3-5 second knock on start-up issue...then it would quiet down.
