Truck ('05 SE, 31k miles) went to service today for a lot of engine whine, especially when cold. SA called me to tell me it was the timing belt tensioner and had to order part. Claimed it should be ok to drive, I reminded him that I was planning a 2000 mile trip over the holidays and felt a bit nervous driving it. He reassured me it should be ok.

Anyone had this problem? Is it really not serious?

Timing belt or timing chain? I thought Nissan already abandoned timing belt.

Yeah, 05 should be timing CHAIN.

Sounds like a scam...

Sorry about that, I meant timing chain tensioner. Any harm in driving it around for say 2000 miles.

I'm getting that squeaky annoying noise from one of the belts. I've been told to check the tensioner - I call the auto parts store they are telling me that it is spring loaded and that are no adjustments therefore they will need to be replaced. They said it is a dealer only part. Apparently there are two tensioners (AC Compressor & Alternator) around $85/each at the dealer. I think I might change the belts first, $10/each at PepBoys - just to see what happens.

Anyone change the belt tensioner? I have a 2002 with 90,000 miles and the belt would occasionally squeak, changed the belts. At start up it would make a squeal and then silence. Now no noise at all. The belts were changed at 60,000 by the dealer and although I replaced them with AUTOZONE belts, they did not have to be replaced at all. They were not worn at all in the 30,000 miles. I don't have a problem now but thinking for the future.

Sounds like you guys are talking about 2 different things here.Is it timing belts/chains, or is it serpentine belts?Which do you need advice with?

I'm talking about the timing chain tensioner. Parts will be in on the 19th, so I'll let you all know if it fixes the problems.

Hi,

I have a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder LE. I am facing this problem as well. There is a squeaky noise coming from the engine compartment and I took it to the Nissan Dealer and they said that the belt and the tensioner will need to be changed. They said the whole thing will cost $225. The parts are available at dealer only.I then took it to Midas to make sure that both needed to be changed and the folks there said that there is no need to change both. Just change the belt and that should be it. I have about 40K miles on my truck and he said that the tensioner should not create problems so early in the mileage....Just changing the belt is costing $150 including labor.
