I have a 2005 Pathfinder LE that has a relatively loud engine ticking noise when cold. Usually goes away after about 10 minutes. The dealership says it's normal. Is it?

Mine had a slight tick. Make sure your oil is changed often enough. Also I used a flush to clean the engine up. The experts in other forums here recommend the BG44k which is heavy duty and not a mild cleaner. You will want to follow directions as stated and I was suprised to find a ton of carbon and who knows what else broken loose. If you car is high miles, like 100,000 or more, you might want to do it in 2 doses instead of one.The thing is, it cleans. Really cleans. You might as well use the fuel system cleaner too and replace the fuel filter which is super easy and by the spare tire. This stuff is not a gymmick and used in even more exotic engines. You put it in just before change, run it for 10 minutes. Then drain completely. I raised the front end to get more out.Infiniti dealerships use this product. It is probably mild buildup and many a owner has said the ticking stopped after this.It will be doing your engine a favor. You cannot buy it at any store. It is for the shops and you can buy it from Infiniti of Scottsdale parts dept and they will ship it. If you really want to do it pro. Get some cheap cheap oil. Dump flush in your oil you have now, run as directed, with a little increase and mild rpm climb and fall, and then drain as good as you can.Put a new cheap filter on, dump Wal Mart crap oil in, run it for 100 miles or so, and then dump that. Then put the good stuff in along with a new filter.Every couple years this is good policy. My oil turned black, then the oil I put in got mildly dark in about 50 miles. It is 100% safe for your engine. Don't use other flushes.Or you could do the half *** way and add 1 qt of marvels mystery oil and do everything else as normal. either way should help. You can read more about BG products on the Q45 forum here. This worked well for me.

Ok, I think my engine ticks too. Been thinking it was an exhaust leak as it only does it when cold.

Any idea on what causes the ticking?

Ya. Maybe you're right. Exhaust leak makes sense because it would go away when the metals heat up. I guess my next stop will be a muffler shop.
