First of all, don't go back to that dealership. If it took that long and that much harassing just to get you a diagnosis and estimate, it's probably a sloppy guess at best, especially considering your experience with them. You can probably safely disregard what they said. There are plenty of good shops out there that will treat you right, though I can't recommend any in your area.
I'd start by finding out what codes are being thrown. If dashboard lights are popping on, it's most definitely throwing codes. Any mechanic can tell you what they are and what they mean, but they'll charge around $100 to do so. You can also bring the car to pretty much any auto parts store and they'll scan for free and give you the codes. Once you get them do some searching on the forum and post them here if you can't find any answers.
Also, which lights are on? ABS, SES, 4WD, etc. What other problems have you had, and how did you address them, if you have yet?
And welcome to the forum!
