My 05 V6 Altima makes a weird knocking noise when I start it if its cold . The noise sounds like its coming from around the water pump. It makes noise for about a minute until it warms up. The hotter the weather the louder the noise. On cool days its not that bad. Do the water pumps make noise when going bad? I have 65000 miles on it & the noise has been from about 50k. No trouble with overheating. Help Please.

I'm not sure about the water pump issues but it could also be a timing chain guide starting to go. The VQ35 has been known to eat timing chains.

Since it has been happening since 50,000 miles, have you taken to the dealership? Reason being, as NSR A32 said, it sounds like one or more of your timing chain guides have worn down, causing the chain to slap around on the timing chain cover(s). And if you have taken it to the dealership when it was under the powertrain warranty, then it is covered under warranty. However, if you haven't, then you are S.O.L. and have to either fix it yourself, or have a technician do it. There is a bulletin on this now. We replace the main timing chain and all guides, main timing chain tensioner, both secondary chains and both secondary timing chain tensioners. Good luck.

The 3/36 is the standard bumper to bumper warranty, 3 years or 36,000 miles, which ever comes first. The powertrain warranty is 5/60, 5 years or 60,000 miles, which ever comes first. The problem you are having is part of the powertrain. So if you mentioned this problem to a dealership within that time period, then it is covered as it was never fixed. But if you haven't mentioned it before the 60,000 mile mark, then you are S.O.L.
