Nissan sales are up 26% for November, and I believe it is primarily because of the Titan. You can see the Big 3's sales dropped way down, and this is because they're losing pickup sales left and right.

The F-150 sustains Ford as a company, and Nissan is going to take that sustenance away with the Titan. pwnage.

Ford's losses can be attributed to their complete disregard for the passenger car market. The opposite explains Chevy's gains.

The Titan is one hell of a truck, but it'll take a lot more than a good product to get Americans out of their F-150s and Silverados.

RIP Oldsmobile.

My F-150 is a great truck, but if I had to replace it today you had better believe it would be with a Titan.

Winners:-Nissan

Losers:-Honda

That report is a little misleading. When you are talking about % change, the base number is more important. I.E. Nissan has barely broken 700,000 sales but Chevy and Ford have 2.3 Million.

25% of 706,006 is 176,501.505% of 2,304,036 is 115,201.8

Even with that 60,000 lead in percent change of sales, Chevy and Ford still dominate total sales. These two companies represent a 1/3 of all cars sold, combining for 4.6 million of the 14.2 million cars sold. To say that Suzuki is now a market contender because of there near 30% increase is absurb, so it is also not logical to say that Nissan is now a bigger player in the market.

According to my math, Toyota is number 3 in total sales, followed by Dodge at 1 million. Nissan is at number 6 in total sales. The American manufacturer leaders, Ford and Chevy, better figure out the appeal of the big gainers, and hold onto their share of the market. Or they may end up down there with Dodge and begin to lose their share. Here is a quick spread sheet and graph, it's only 21K.

HOWEVER, to counter the apparently misleading numbers...

Remember that those "big producers" provide a majority of rental cars and government vehicles. Big boost in numbers right there.

If Ford was to NEVER sellanother passenger car, they would STILL be profitable because of their cash cow, the F150.

Thats an excellent point. This is also the first time in almost two decades that GM has actually gained market share.

Did GM really gain with the Oldsmobile loss?

Growth in market share is growth in market share, plain an simple. That's why they compare using %'s, not the raw numbers. You're correct in pointing out one manufacturers growth as being hundreds of thousands while only being a single digit %. That's why you should always look for the whole data, not just part of it. It's all a matter of perspective.

Twain said it best - "Lies, damn lies and statistics".

This is also U.S. sales. I could be mistaken but isn't Toyota #1 worldwide in sales percentages. Hitman also had a very valid point that a lot of the big 3 sales are either government or commercial sales so that changes the curve also.

Ford doth be dropping...understandable though...they really need to get in the game with some better compact and family sedan (think new taurus that's good) and a new ranger...

oh...get their reliability reputation and build quality back too..

I think Toyota did finally pass Ford in worldwide though...or really close too it...

Nissan has really picked up the pace since the mid-90s. I wonder if the guys in the other car forums track their manufacturer's market progress.

actually with all their overseas ventures gm is first, followed by toyota then ford, but fords also includes all their ventures. i dont think thats how these stats were organized though, because you can see like chevy and saab, part of gm, and mazda and volvo and such, i believe if you divide it up like this then yes toyota is number one.

I'm not picking a fight, I just like to debate.

Those contracts could just as well be made with Nissan. Nissan can just as well get to the bartering tables as Ford and Chevy can. It's all about the dollar and which company can get more company cars for less money and maintain them for less. I don't know much about the truck market, but from what little I've read sounds similar to what you guys are saying. For about the last year the f-150 has been carrying ford, while chevy has been making efforts to diversify their market interest.

I'm shooting from the hip here with no numbers, but I thought Toyo did have the global market by a good number? (Saab is owned by gm?! I didn't know that). Mr1der said it best. The US Manufacturers need to get their quality and durabilty reputations back. I had a consumer marketing class where we discussed market complacany, and how ford, chevy, and the like were struggle to even peak the interest of new buyers who opted for Honda's because of the reliabilty.

I also agree that you have to start somewhere, stealing someone's market shares, is a very good place to start. The goal is to keep them in your court.

Does anyone care to explain to me why Oldsmobile is even on that list? They don't exist anymore.

Oldsmobile was great, GM should have axed Buick.

The problem we'll see as far as the Titan stealing truck buyers from the Big Three is that most truck owners are so intensely brand loyal that they could not care less which truck is "better." All they care about is that its the brand they worship. It'll take a lot to rip most of them away from "their" brands.

Even though the Titan is far superior to any other half-ton pickup, they'll just keep on beleiving their brand is the best...it has to be...

I think Olds is on the list because the did make some sales this year, and they have been a contender in the past so they were listed.

I whole heartedly agree that brand loyalty plays a HUGE role in US manufactures, especially in the male dominated market of trucks, someone is buying the Titan tho and I guarantee you that all the marketing deparments are scrambling to find out who and why.

according to UK auto mag "CAR magazine" Toyota has been the highest world wide seller for the past few years. GM doesn't sell any cars overseas. If you go to europe you will see more than a few fords, but hardly any chevys.

That may be so, but GM owns or has controlling interest in a lot of foreign car companies. At this hour of the morning all I can think of is opel and Saab, but I know they own others. Or are you only talking about Chevy and Ford Name brand cars such as the Escort and the Cavalier?

GM also owns Daewoo. Ever seen one of those Chevy Aveo things? Yeah, not really a Chevy, it's a Daewoo.

People started buying 240sx's instead of Mustangs and LS400s instead of Cadillacs...

No reason a good product like the Titan won't make a big impact in the truck market, but I agree that it will take awhile.

Skwerel: When automotive sales numbers are posted (at least in industry publications like weekly automotive news) they are by brand, so Ford sales are only of vehicles carrying Ford badges, etc... Thus, an Aston Martin sale would not be counted as a Ford sale, regardless of the fact that they have a controlling interest in the company.

Nissan 240 sales never came close to touching the Mustang. They competed in different segments of the market anyway.

The Titan is a nice truck, but it looks so darn goofy from the front. I'd personally buy an F150 or Silverado.

I'm not so sure they have anything on Subaru. Check GM.com and look at the middle bar w/the manufacturers they "own". I think that subaru rumor is only due to the joint efforts in producing the wrx based saab. Kinda like daimler/mitsubishi. Also due to the fact that gm in fact owns 20% of fuji's heavy Industry, which is the mother company of subaru.
