Hello: First post here!

I have a 2004 Quest Van. Today, I started it up just fine. Was about 200 yards from the train station, and when I took a left turn, the accelerator went straight to the floor, and the entire engine died. After coasting to a stop, i tried starting the engine.

The engine is trying to turn over, but it just won't kick in and start.
  • Oil is filled to right level
It has half a tank of gas
The fuel pump fuse is still o.k.
Could this be a fuel pump issue? I know there is a fuel pump relay under the hood, but I cannot tell when fuse box it's in, and even if I did, don't see a schematic as to where in the box it is. I know you can test the relay, but I don't know how to test it. I would rather test a relay than buying a 300.00 fuel pump, install it only to find out that's not the issue.

Any help someone can provide would be great. Thanks!

Update:

I take things back, I can hear the fuel pump energize when I turn the key to the on position. However, the car will not start. I removed the fuel pump relay, tested it, and it works. I know it's the fuel pump relay, cause when I removed it, fuel pump would not start whirring, and I found a schematic. :)

Prior to all of this I failed to mention throwing a p0021 code, and a p0300. I replaced the camshaft sensor last night, but still, the engine will not start. What is weird is that when the car died today, the gas gauge showed half full, and now it shows out of gas and the gas pump light is on. Just strange. any ideas anyone???

Well, I took the battery back to AutoZone, and had them charge it. It's cranking noticeably better in terms of the sound, but still won't turn over. I suspect that the problem is likely either one of the coils, or one of the plugs themselves. Problem is, since it's throwing a p0021 and p0300, that second code is not denoting which cylinder is affected.

How do you test spark plugs and or coils? I got a subscription to AllData.com, but they dont' tell you how to test this stuff.

Pull your distributor cap and very briefly try to crank the motor. Watch for the rotor to turn and if it doesn't, then you've found your problem. The timing belt broke or at least sheered several teeth.

It just occurred to me that I'm assuming your 04 even has a distributor, hehe.

It does not have one. Ignition coils.

Is there a way to test still?

your 2004 Quest has a timing chain, not a belt. There is no maintenance interval for the timing chain, it is considered lifetime.

but, some did have problems with them...

but from what i'm reading on that other site, you may have a possible TSB that deals with timing chain noise & may be covered under extended warranty (60,000 miles?)

of course, doesn't hurt to remove the cover and check if the chain broke

did you also visually check if your ECM didn't rust apart?

and a link to the FSM is on this site:

you'll find procedures to check you coils and spark plugs and others here

I know its been awhile since I last posted on this topic, but my Quest is still not working. Without going into details, we took it to a mechanic friend of the family and he's worked on it in his spare time. However, he's not able to get it to work. What I can tell you is that now WE CAN get spark from the engine. The Fuel pump is energizing still, but it's not firing up.

Now with this new information, does anyone have any idea what the issue might be? ECM is not rusted btw.

Just Curious, did you ever get it fixed?
