I've been dealing with a power steering leak for some time now coming from the steering rack. I have tried lucas stop leak and a few others but the leak still persists. I am wondering if anyone has had to replace their steering rack & pinions & can assist. I can get a used one at a nearby junk yard at a relatively good rate.

thanks,

Using "snake oil" solutions like Lucas is not a good idea. These scammers prey on desperate people promising miracles and delivering a bill of goods.

I've got little to add other than we had the rack go out (leak) on our 2001 Ford Windstar, but luckily it was replaced for me under warranty. I'd be hesitant to install a used rack, but at the end of the day, any used or reman'd can be a risk these days. Sometimes the piston seals in the rack just plain wear out, but often they're taken out by nasty old dirty PS fluid. The little bits of debris in there will wear them out quicker. Key is to at a minimum, suck out and refill the PSF reservoir every so often. Better to remove the return hose and do a full system at once, but a reservoir drain/fill is good too.
