2004 nissan xterra oil use

i have a 04 xterra. i t has the 3.3 v6. it is automatic with air..if it matters. it uses a half quart of oil or so in between oil changes. is this normal . it has 81000 miles on it

Yes, probably PCV system getting old. Switch/clean pcv valve, use 10 w 40 and/or don't worry too much about it. Unless you are using a quart every 1000 miles, then sell it. All fixed!!

i run 10w 30. i put a new pvc valve on it when i replaced the knock sensor.i have never owned a car that uses oil between changes. i guess hteres not much to do about it then. thanks for the info

I wonder if it's just burning off a little bit, but don't know if a half quart every oil change interval would be enough to make blue smoke, hmmm. Is the compression good? Are the valve cover gaskets good? If so, then the valve stem seals might be pushing a little oil, but IDK for sure, these are just ideas. Good thing you replaced the PCV while you were already right there next to it.

That is a bit unusual for a VG engine, particularly since they only hold 3.5 quarts to begin with.

Any noticeable leaks or blue smoke on startup?
