Post

About 4 years ago I bought a 2004 Maxima SE w/ 6 spd manual. Was tons of fun to drive for the money and all was well in the world. Within the first year of ownership I started having weird crap happen, the power windows and power locks would stop working.. UNTIL I used the fob to open the trunk, then everything would work for a little while. After a few months of this I took it in to the dealer to have it checked out, they told me the BCM was failing and needed to be replaced ($700+). After the BCM was replaced I picked up the car and took it home, the next morning everything was still not working until opening the trunk; so nothing had changed. Took it back in to the dealership and after a few hours they called me and said the issue was the power driver seat. One or more of the motors were dead and was causing a short. I asked them if that meant my old BCM was fine and they assured me that it wasn't (though I have my doubts about this).

I was told it would be $1750+ to replace the motor assembly. Since at the time I was the only driver of the vehicle, and the seat was right where I wanted it already, I said nuts to that and opted to just have the power seat disconnected. Once the power seat was disconnected everything else started working like a charm. Been going strong for 3+ years now. Unfortunately, now I'm wanting to sell the car and move on to bigger and better things; but I can't imagine anyone wanting to buy a car without an adjustable driver seat. I'm looking for advice and opinions on the most affordable way to deal with this issue, the car only has just over 104k miles on it now so it should have plenty of life left otherwise. As near as I can tell the motor assembly is $1150-$1300 to purchase, assuming you can even find one to buy.

The options I've come up with

1) Buy the crazy expensive motor assembly and replace it, wiping out probably ~20% of what I could expect to sell the car for on a good day.
2) Find a wrecked one in a wrecking yard and get the motor assembly and pray that it still works
3) Replace the seat with a non-power seat. (Is this even an option???)

On the subject of option #2, apparently the replacement seats are different for the 2004 Maxima based on when the vehicle was manufactured (mine was built in March of 2003). Does anyone know if that difference also applies to the motor assembly?

Looking for advice on these ideas, or any additional suggestions anyone may have. Thanks in advance.
