I have a 2004 Maxima with 80,000 miles on it. Recently I have noticed an increased ticking/tapping noise. The noise appears the loudest at idle after warm up. It is not noticable at higher RPMS or when it is cold. I thought it could be a stuck lifter so I ran seafoam through the crank case but the noise remained. I'm considering a possible collapsed lifter? However, I listened with a stethoscope and the noise seems the loudest toward the timing chain cover, but I cant tell if it is simply carrying through the metal. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin

Could just be a worn timing chain guide. It'd fairly common with most timing chained vehicles.

The VQ35 is known for having a loud timing chain. Especially at idle right after startup, it'll make a soft, rapid clicking noise. That's normal, and not a sign of anything to worry about. If you're getting a heavier ticking noise it may be something different.

That's what I have going on but getting louder. Warranty is close to running out, off to the dealer!!
