No, you shouldn't have to. This age of Nissan RWDs had the tank strapped to the car at the front of the trunk, right behind the seat firewall, so to say. So if you remove the clips holding that trunk fabric, you should see the tank in the trunk.
To get more to your starting problem:
I am assuming your car was fine until you replaced the battery, correct?
1. Might seem silly to ask, but what is the CCA rating on this new battery? Make sure it's got enough juice.
2. Make sure you're not stomping on the gas pedal while trying to start it. Also, try quickly jabbing the gas pedal during this process, does it start?
3. Have you located your fuel pump fuse and is it ok?
4. Are there any codes active or pending with the check engine light?
