Sorry in advanced if this is in the wrong section or an extremely novice question. I'm more of a computer geek than I am a car enthusiast.

My 2004 Infiniti G35x seems to have a rusted shaft / rod that attaches to the left front wheel assembly. On the right side of the car this shaft / rod is completely gone (nothing is connected to the wheel assembly). There seems to be a fairly large bolt that keeps the whole thing together, so I'm not sure how much supporting the rod actually does / did. I do not know the proper term for this part, but I would like help in determining what it is called.

I've mentioned this particular part to the Infiniti dealer in the past when the right side of the car still had the shaft / rod (it was broken in half and hanging at that time.) They did not seem too concerned as they said that the overall functionality of the car would not be hindered and it did not pose as a threat.

There does not seem to be any issues with steering or functionality of the car with the lack of a shaft / rod on the right or a rusted shaft / rod on the left. My question to you is should this be of a concern?

Here is the left side of the car:

Thanks in advanced!

:welcome: to NICO!

I'm not familiar enough with your car's suspension setup to know what that is from a glance, but I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't be there if it didn't serve a purpose.

Do you want me to move this to the G35 forums where it will receive more attention?

Done - with a "shadow topic" in IOM... I'm curious to see if this is common!

I was under our G today and noticed these rods. They look important enough to replace to me. They should be providing lateral stability to that area of the suspension. From what I could tell, they shouldn't be that difficult to replace.

The Infiniti dealer replaced both my lower control arms at 125k miles in Oct 2010

I noticed a substantial improvement in handling of my G

I looked in the FSM (factory service manual) and Infiniti refers to this part as a "Compresson Rod Stay"

It appears that they're pretty cheap. www.orderinfinitiparts.com sells them for $38.07 each.

To the OP, I'm not surprised that your right one rusted out first... mine was getting a steady drip of A/C condensate - so if you live in a cold climate it's taking a double hit- salt in the winter and condensate in the summer.

Thank you all for your replies! I appreciate all of the information you provided me, especially the name the rod and the pricing. That's interesting your Infiniti dealer replaced them at 125k miles, my car is at 130k miles. As for the steady drip of A/C condensation that makes a lot of sense, I noticed that too! I DO live in a cold climate (Massachusetts in the winter, car was in New Hampshire for a while as well).
