I have been quoted $350 to change my spark plugs on my 2004 Infiniti FX35, does that sound reasonable? Is this necessary at this time? Any suggestions?

Regards,

Joe

Yikes ...who did you get that quote from? The dealer? I use an independent Infiniti mechanic for the service I cannot do myself and he is quite a bit cheaper than the dealers but plugs are fairly straight-forward. You should try doing this yourself. If you'd prefer to have an expert do it, you should look for an independent Infiniti mechanic in your area of for something like plugs, you could really go to a reputable mechanic who specializes in Japanese cars and if I had to do that, I would bring them the OEM parts to have them installed as they may use after-market parts (which is OK if you are OK with it ...I prefer to go with the OEM parts). You can buy the plugs and plug wires from online Infiniti parts stores.

I thought the price was high, if anyone can recommend a good mechanic in lower CT or Westchester County in NY I would appreciate it. Do you know what kind of spark plugs I should use so I can purchase and find an installer?

Infiniti recommends platinum-tipped plugs and for your engine, you need PLFR5A-11 or you can use PLFR4A-11 (hot type) or PLFR6A-11 (cold type), all with a gap of 0.043 inches (1.1 mm). I believe these part nos. are all NGK brand and you can get them on Amazon.com for about $9-$10 each. I didn't see the 4A ones on there but the 5A and 6A are avail on Amazon.

Can't help you on a mechanic in your area. If you don't get response on here, I suggest looking online for one. If you have an Infiniti mechanic do this for you, they may want you to buy the plugs from them. If you do it yourself, then you can order them as I mentioned above.

$350 actually isn't to bad for a dealership. If you decide to use a independent mechanic, just be certain he/she has a good reputation for redoing work in a timely manner and without additional cost if the job is botched. Sometimes, trying to save a $1.00 can cost you $5.00. How many miles does your FX35 have on it? You may want to consider getting a 60k service if you already haven't had one. You either going to pay now or later when issues snow ball.

I have 106,000 miles on my FX, I did the 60k service back then, not sure if I will do the spark plugs if I keep the car for 2 more years, it just seems like alot for spark plugs. What do you think?
