Hi All,

First post here and I wish I were starting on a more positive note: BUT anyway...

I have a 2004 G35 Sedan with 58K that just threw up a SES code of P0442, which is "Evap Emission Control Leak (Small)" Car seems to be fine with no noticeable issues.

1) IF it is the gas cap (and I correct it), will it just go away or does the code lock until cleared?

2) What is next after the gas cap to check?

3) Should I clear the code (have a scanner on loan) or leave it for the dealer?

4) Since I'm under warranty (I am, right?) do I just take it to the stealer and let them deal with it?

Did you forget to close your cap after filling?? If so, do the ECU reset and see if the code goes away. If it doesn't, the dealer would be your best bet.

Well my wife was driving it when it happened. I asked her to check the gas cap before I even knew what the code was and she said it was OK.

Anyway, I went ahead and cleared the code

BUT

Then the SLIP and VDC lights came on and stayed on - I shut the car off and it wouldn't restart (like it wasn't sending it fuel).

I turned it off, pulled the key and after about 30 sec tried it again. Car fired right up and even seems to have more pep.

If it was the gas cap, it should clear itself after a few start ups. Don't go out there and turn it on and off, just wait a day or two under normal operation. I had a previous vehicle have this problem, part of it was the vacuum lines as well. But if I went on a road trip, stopped for gas, my CES light would come on and the engine would start running at higher RPMs. Then once I arrived and ran it under normal operation, it would stop and clear itself. It was annoying and expensive as the dealer kept diagnosing it as distributors, vacuum lines, and ignition wires.

Sounds like you have something else going on if you had the VDC/Slip indicator issue. You may also want to pull the additional codes.

Here is a link to the FSM for EC management that walks through the troubleshooting steps:

You may want to download that to your desktop.

There was a recall for the fuel filler hose. Not sure it that would have anything to do with it. I would disconnect the negative terminal for half hour and reconnect to get rid of the code.

When my wife says she wants to drive my G, I always try to talk her out of it.

Girlfriends are probably ok as if you make them happy, they'll keep you happy. Wives are another story
