Hi All:

70K miles

About 3 times over the last 60K and after cranking it sounds like all the pistons are going thru the hood............

Dealership service writer says that this is normal with this type of engine?

I have 5 months left on the Mfr warranty.

Metal on Metal does not excite me.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

GMAN01

If you are talking about that noise after initial cold start up, that noise can be normal. It is the tension on timing chain. My old engine did it and the new one with 6k miles on it does it to especially if the car has sat for a few days.

Does it quiet down after warming up???
My 05 did this and they replaced the chain tensioner
Sounded like a push rod was trying to escape out of the valve cover!

I've noticed a tad of chain rattle on mine when you crank it cold but it's barely noticeable. I had the same noise with my 2k2 Maxima that had the VQ35DE (which is the same motor you have in your 2004).
