Hi All:

I have a 2004 G35 Coupe with 70K. I bought it with about 12K.

I started it today and it sounded like the pistons were about to go thru the hood.

I cut it off after about 5 seconds.

This has happened about 3 times in 5 years.

The Service writer at the dealership stated that this occurs with this engine?

I have 5 more months of the factory warranty left.

Metal on Metal does not excite me.

Thanks,

GMAN 01 fmly GMAN 1950..................

When i cold start my G the injectors are very loud making a ticking noise. Soon after the noise go aways, but within there, you may hear the valves as well. Im not for sure if you have heard this noise before, but it is pretty common, as in, happens all the time on cold starts. This may be what your service guy was talking about it.

If you think you're hearing something different, I would get a compression and leak down test both done from the dealer.

It may also be a timing chain loose on either head. I would have that examined as well.

Hi:

Thanks for the quick reply.

With my luck we probably will not be able to replicate it.

I asked about a compresion check this week and the writer's first esponse on the phone today was we will check the oil level?

Dah I can do that.

Thanks for your advise.

I had this once on the wife's G... sounded like absolute crap for a few seconds at startup. This was about 4 years ago and I haven't heard it since. Have you had any oil consumption issues?

The 04 can get a little noisy even with perfect maintenance. I have started to notice it more on cars that do no have nissan OE oil filters. The drainback valve inside the filter can actually help the engine retain some the oil in the upper end of the engine.

Most of the noise on startups I am used to seeing on these cars comes from the timing chain tensioner or lifters but they are not all the same.

What kind of oil and filter are you using?

Speaking of oil filters... I'm getting ready to put in an order with IOS and need to stock up for the G and Frontier. I'm thinking of switching to Mobil 1, since the OEM are now made in China. Something about putting one on a Japanese car just seems wrong...

Do you have any thoughts on the M1 filter in terms of the drain-back valve, or otherwise?

Eh I really do not know. I only use factory on my car. Being Made in China isn't a complete deal breaker for me with an oil filter. Are M1s made in America? Or are you just throwing caution into the wind?

I do not really have an opinion either way on the M1, some of the G guys swear by them.

I'm pretty sure the M1 are made here. I don't know... I'm usually not a big "Made in the USA" kind of guy, but something about outsourcing their filters to China just rubs me the wrong way...

Hard to beat the performance of the Pure One filter by purolator, especially considering the lowish price- Mobil 1, Amsoil EAO are also top notch filters at about 2x the cost of the pure one

I agree,

Nissan is pretty ocd about sourcing parts especially if they are from anywhere other than the US. I do more oil changes than any one person really should and I have yet to see one of the new filters leak or degrade in any noticeable way. They always tend to feel heavier (citation required) when removed and allowed to drain (typically as I am throwing them away).

I see it like I see aftermarket air filters. The larger screen media or more oil tends to cause more problems and the pros and cons do not work for my daily driver.

I do still have a few big blue 55Y00s and some dino Castrol oil for the J though and that is all my car ever gets and it loves it.
