2003 SE Maxi engine power problem

I have a 2003 SE Titanium edition with 81K miles. Today I noticed a problem that I never encountered before. If I try to go over 2K-2.5K RPM the engine starts lurching like its fuel starved. It feels like its dying, and when it goes below 2K everything return to normal. Its feels just like when I ran out of gas once, except the engine does not die just starts sputtering. It does not appear to matter what gear I am in. BTW, the check engine light has not lit up yet. What could this be? Can I fix it myself or do I have to fork over the $$$ and have the dealer do the work? Any suggestions would help.

just found this post, must've gotten lost between all others. sounds like your car is in limp mode - check eng light on?
