I have a 2003 XTerra and for the past 2 or 3 weeks have been having problems with my door locks. What happens is when you click on the remote (on your key chain) once, the driver door unlocks, and when you click on twice the other doors unlock. Well, when I click on it the second time, the other doors are not unlocking. I already made sure it was not the battery in the remote. I seem to remember something like this happening before, but when it happened before my car was still under warranty and Nissan said that they reset it. Well, now that my car is out of warranty, all of a sudden Nissan doesn't know how to reset it and tries to tell me I need to have a full diagnostic ran on it (b.s.). Does anyone know how to reset it so I can hopefully fix this problem? Please, I know it may sound minor to some, but with kids this feature is a god send. Thank You for any help.

There are a few possibilities to your issue:

1. There is a relay in the doors that unlocks them when the key-fob is pressed. The relay may be worn out, partially unplugged or just have a bad ground.

The other more costly issue is called the Smart Entry Control Unit. This is a small box located on the driver's side very close to where your hood release is located. Basically just above your feet and to the left. If you have an email address that can handle a 9MB file I would be happy to send you the electrical portion of my CD manual. The diagnostic process is too long to list on NICO's forum.

Have you tried putting your key in the driver's side door and turning the key to lock and unlock all the doors?

With all the doors closed and unlocked insert the key into the driver's door lock.Turn the key counter clockwise and this should lock all the doors.Turn the key CLOCKWISE once and this should unlock the driver's door.Turn the key CLOCKWISE again and all the passenger doors and rear hatch should unlock.

If this works you may have a faulty KEYFOB that could be showing signs of wear or the Smart Entrance Control Unit could be starting to fail.

There are 2 other things you can try. But I don't know if these will work.

1. Disconnect the Xterra's main negative cable from the battery. This can sometimes reset the computer and some fault codes. (I suspect the last time you had this issue the mechanics plugged in a computer and cleared a code with their diagnostic tool.) Reconnect the battery and see if that helps.

2. REPROGRAM your key-fob remote with a new watch battery in the unit. Your owners manual will describe how to do that. This process takes only a few minutes.

As I said, if you have an email address that can accept a large file I can send you the entire section on your door locks and how to better assess the problem. I wish I could be of more help to you.

Hi,

I am having the same problem with my 2004 Xterra, I wouldn't mind if you sent me the technical manual regarding this subject.

Both my Hotmail account and my work email can handle 10Mb attachements.

[email protected]@jagal.com

Using the key twice doesn't open all doors, but using the internal lock/unlock switch on the drivers side door does lock and unlock all doors.I am leaning towards the relay being loose, where is it located, is it in the door?

Thanks for any help.

I have this exact same problem. After me and my buddy installed my remote start/security system my power locks stopped working. We crossed the output wires and the input wires into the smart entry control unit. I highly doubt its the relay since we do hear a click from the smart entry control unit, when we attempt to unlock and lock the doors. the only power lock function that does work is that the driver side door locks when remotely locked. Other than than no other doors unlock or lock. any input? can i have that 9mb file? [email protected]

Is there anyway you could send the information to me as well? I am having the same issue since an accident. They replaced the back door hatch and now I have the exact same situation as listed above. I say its their fault, they deny it. I'm getting married and don't have a lot of cash to pay in repairs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Door lock problem. Installed a remote start. Must have crossed a wire. Lost all door lock functions except driver door lock (unlock doesnt work). Have unhooked battery and reprogrammed fob. Have tried the reprogram with ignition key. Checked 7.5 amp fuse. Checked 40 amp fuse. Checked drivers door switch. Can hear relays clicking when use door lock switch. I have read in one place and in the door lock trouble shooting section of the manual, that the smart lock control unit is ahead of hood release. The box that does all the clicking and the wire color codes match up with the one behind the park brake release. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
