Does anyone have any experience cutting through the trunk wall to create a pass/through to the folding rear armrest (for skis etc). Is there anything I should be wary about?

do NOT cut a pass through in your trunk. You will puncture the gas tank which was so conveniently placed all-up-in-and-through the M's back seat area (great engineering, huh?). You are out of luck regarding fitting skis inside your car, as far as I know.

Actually, there is a great reason for the placement behind the rear seat. It is the safest place for a gas tank.

If you scrape things on the bottom with going off road by accident, or have a front-end collision with higher speeds (most common), since rear-enders tend to be at lower speeds and do not crush the cars as much, having the gas tank not rupture, and not leak and not catch on fire is a big plus!
