Hello All,

Live in Houston, TX and I recently purchased 2003 M45 with 85000 miles on it. Drove only 400 miles and yesterday I was waiting on the parking lot with A/C on and i heard a lil noise on the engine then the temperature gauge goes up to H, so I turned the A/C off and the noise shuts off right away and temperature gauge started to go down again to the original location. Do you guys have any idea what will the reason behind it. Want to try first if I can fix it otherwise if i take it to dealer its just too much money i have to spend.

Please advise me and thank you all in advance.

Given the year of the car, I would start by changing the water pump, thermostat, and coolant.

Also, I would check to see if the fan (in front of the car) clicks on when your ac is turned on.
Cold also be coolant temp sensor.

Did your service engine light come on?

I had the same problem, but I found out that it was the lubricating oil/coolant for the cooling fans ... yes you read that right "cooling fans". My car was at the bodyshop and the guys took apart the radiator not knowing that was such a thing. It was only after the bodyshop towed it to the dealership was I made aware of the uniqueness of the 2003-2004 M45.

I'm not saying that it couldn't be the "usual" things. There is a service manual somewhere on this site for the M45 that might help.

Congratulations on your purchase! I hope this is the only issue you have with the car!!!

^^ Wow, great information. Where do you put or how do you put the lubricating oil on the cooling fans?
Thanks for your help.

banglabhai-

The fan takes power steering fluid (or ATF), you need to remove the plastic engine cover to find the reservoir, which is towards the front of the engine, driver's side.

It does make kind of a whining, chattering sound when the fluid is low, especially when the system calls for "high speed" fan operation.

There have been several threads on this board related to Y34 overheating and hydraulic fans, a quick search on "cooling fan" may provide even more helpful info.

cheers
