Which type of oil is best for 03 m45. I currently use mobil 1 5w30 advanced synthetic. Is 0w40 better?

Let me first start by saying that "the best oil for your car is fresh oil" - changed at a good interval. :Yesnod

In other words, almost any good 5W-30 (dino or synthetic), changed often enough, will be fine for our cars! In terms of what is "often enough", only a full oil analysis will determine the best value for a given oil you choose to use, but doing it every 3750 miles is likely to be perfectly fine for almost any oil.

For dino, I recommend Chevron Supreme or Castrol GTX in a 5W-30. For synthetic, the 0W-40 Mobil 1 Synthetic was recommended by a chemist here at NICO (Fred Palmer) as being a better oil than their 5W-30 Synthetic. As far as I know, it is the same price, so why not use it (although it is not available everywhere).

So ... having said the above, I can also say that I feed my 2003 M45 a steady diet of 0W-40 Mobil 1 Synthetic and a new filter every 3750 miles. Overkill? Perhaps. But, I feel that I am providing a great balance of high quality oil (synthetic vs. dino), cost (Mobil 1 rather than more expensive Royal Purple), and a good OCI interval (perhaps a bit quick at 3750 miles).

Thanks i appreciate the feedback. I try to keep my oil as fresh as possible I change every 3k miles the maintinence display is a great feature to remind me to do it. Currently using the advanced synthetic Mobil 5 30 with matching filter I'm going to give the 0w 40 and Oem filter a try next change hopefully I get some extra life out of this beast.

Just stick with OEM spec conventional oil for your late model M45. Synthetic is a waste of money on the 03/04 M45 engine. You will be fine with a 5k change interval. However, check your oil level every 1,500 miles to determine if you experience any oil consumption. I'm sure you already knew this but the VK45DE is known for oil consumption.

I saw the pictures someone posted about installing a catch can to reduce oil consumption has anyone else done it with good results? I just stick to always driving with an extra quart in trunk and checking it often
