Hello everybody,

When I purchased my 03 M45 a year ago, the dealer did NOT have the original black key fob/remote for the car (that starts the car with the plastic end with the metal key inside). He only had an aftermarket "regular key"

I recently purchased some used key fobs/remotes from Ebay and used the programming instructions to program the automatic door locks/alarm/truck release, but the fobs/remotes do NOT start the car when you insert it into the ignition!!!! I was NOT aware that the black plastic fob can be used as a key until the dealer recently told me this information!!

He told me that the fobs may have been off a Q45 (they are the same style as the 03-04 M45) and may be the reason why I cannot start the car with it.

Does anybody have any help or input they can provide?? Is the dealer correct? I used the standard ignition in/out several times method to program the remotes, but they will NOT start the vehicle when you insert the plastic end!!! It just goes in but does not turn.

I appreciate any feedback anybody may have

You need to go to the stealer to get them programmed. There are numbers that need to be electronically programmed to match the cars identity. You can't do this yourself. My dealer has done it for free for me. But others I have heard have charged $90 to get it done.

Not to change the subject, but I have a question about the original keys that were provided to new owners of this M. What keys were included? I only received one key with the steel insert that comes out. Was there a card or an extra valey key? Plus, my key doesn't insert into the trunk to open it, but I can use th steel inser to open the door if needed. Does this mean I have the valet key?

Yes. Two fobs and two keys (that do open the trunk and glove box).

I.e., these metal keys are NOT valet keys. The idea is that you remove the insert key and give the fob to the valet to start the car. Since the fob is the only thing that will insert into the right location to start the car!

And, yes, you need an Infiniti consult to program the fobs as far as I know. Dealer has to do it, and you need ALL fobs - as far as I remember, they have to be programmed at the same time. The reason is that the fob contains a transponder that must match the ECU information to allow the car to start.

So, buying a key on eBay - even if it an Infiniti OEM - does not mean you can start the car. The car and/or key have to be reprogrammed with the Consult device. Only a dealer can do this ...

BTW, I did not think the car could be started with just a "regular key". I have not looked at my car, but I did not think there was a spot for that key to be inserted to start the car!

Okay, I just looked at the Owner's Manual and it is pretty clear that the emergency key (the insert) cannot be used to start or drive the car.

while we are on the subject, anyone ever need to actually USE their actual KEY to open the drivers door?

Actually, I only have a "regular" key for my 03 M45. When I purchased it, the dealer (not an Infiniti Dealership) had a regular metal key (I assume with a transponder under the black plastic) programmed for the vehicle that inserts into the ignition like regular cars. I had no remote, just the one regular looking key with one serrated side like any other key. I just recently was told that the remotes I purchased on Ebay can ALSO be used as keys to start the car. I guess according to the posts, ONLY the dealer can do this.

Can somebody please confirm that the remotes I purchased on EBay -WILL- program so that I can start the car with them??? Even though they may be for a Q45??? They design is the same as the 03 M45.

Thank-you

Open the screw in the back and remove the back carefully and look at the Approval ID numbers inside.

If the FCC ID is: KBRASTU13, and the Model number is: ASTU13 and the Canadian ID is: 21111032365, then I believe it will work for a 2003 M45 (not 100% sure, but ...).

If the number is anything else, it may not be programmable for a 2003 M45, but I am not sure of that per se - the proof would be to try it.

I have not yet needed to do so. As far as I know the only need would be if the fob electronics are damaged, or the CR2025 battery inside is dead.

It is almost four years for me, and I have not changed the battery yet. Of course, Murphy being who he is, I suspect that when I leave from work today, I will find that I need to use it or the battery is dead or something ...

The Y34 M45 (03-04) Remote key is the same as in an F50 Q45 2001-UP

The remotes I purchased on Ebay and programmed myself work fine and do everything EXCEPT start the vehicle. It locks/unlocks/trunk/alarm etc.

I'm assuming the ONLY way to have these remotes to start my vehicle is to have them "specially" programmed by a delaer. Is that correct?

Yes. That is my understanding!

With just a tiny probability that this fails because the key fobs are not correct for your car.

The key fobs have to be programmed to the car, its the immobilizer if thats what Infiniti/Nissan call it. You cannot start the car any other way than to have a programmed ket. The lock/unlock/trunk have absolutely nothing to do with starting the car. This has been stated earlier in the post. Please go to the dealer and get them programmed and you will be fine.Cheers
