Hi everyone,

The other day, a 3 series wanted to give it a go with my M. Well, let's just say it wasn't even funny what I did to him. Anyway, during this pi**ing contest, and after I destroyed him, I hear this crazy banging noise coming from under the hood. I pull over and the plastic shield that covers the underside of the motor and transmission has come loose and is hanging from the screws left on the front spoiler. My dilemma is this now. What is this part called? I want to replace it since It was pretty much destroyed as I was not able to pull over right away ( I was on a long bridge). I am having a helluva time trying to find the part at Infinitpartsusa.com because I can't figure out what it's called.

thanks everyone, -Chris

Give Joe a call at IoS. I believe he'll be able to figure it out from a description of the "bottom engine cover"

Several of us have lost ours and I believe he's got a more reasonable price on it tham many, but shipping may eat into that advantage. At least he can probably get a part number....

Despite what Car and Driver has to say on the subject I think Infinitis in general dominate BMWs. I'm glad you stuck it to em.

The lower engine cover on the Q and M use about 10 plastic clips to secure everything but the front bumper edge. If my memory serves me I think the part runs around $200-300 but you have to make sure you get new replacement clips.

These little black body trim clips deteriorate over time and we usually replace them as needed I usually go through 10-15 every two weeks. They are the same type of clips used on the engine comparment covers. If you buy the part from a dealer most of the time they will give you a handful of these. I know that's what we usually do.

Yeah It was fun. Lots of BMW's always wanna play with the M for some reason. Most of the time I don't even waste my time, but an open straight shot on a long bridge was just too much to pass up. It was great until that lower cover flew off. I didnt realize so many clips hold that on there.

Anyway, I got a response from InfinitiPartsUsa. They say it's called a lower engine cover, just like you said Steve, and that it would run about $247.04 + shipping. He didn't even mention the clips. Thanks for that tip. I'm going to go digging for some now. Hey everyone, Thanks for the advice!!! -Chris

I replaced the clips in mine twice, did my own engineering in attempts to save it, and finally the plastic just blew out. I really felt that the $275 to replace it was a bit high, so I cut it off with a utility knife just after the front clip. I guess I might replace it one day, but I only drive the car 5,000 miles a year so......

What is the use of all the plastic covers on the engine. They get in the way every time I want to check the oil or change the oil, and I can't imagine any actual utility. Now I see they fall off after a while. Real good design, Infiniti. The driver in the Beem'r would have been amused if he knew the M lost its engine cover racing him. OBTW, the M35 competes with BMW 5 series, not the 3. You might have a different result against a 5 series with the turbocharged engine.

The only mission I can see for the lower engine cover is that it requires you to have the car on a lift to change the oil, which means more owners will have to come back to the dealer for service. I'm sure Infiniti would be real happy to put a lock on the engine compartment, that only they would have the key to. The tiny hatch in the bottom cover is too small to drain the oil from the oil filter, so it pools inside the cover. I will have to fabricate a special pan to catch that inside the cover.

I'm pretty sure that plastic cover has saved serious damage to my block/transmission on a few occasions with some of the crazy road debris out there.

Oh yeah, I thought the guy was gonna laugh when I slowed down, but I blew by him so far, he was too embarrased to even look my way. Good for me.

BTW, I really don't race much like I did when I was younger. Only when provoked. But my M45 has taken out some old hot rods, Mustang Cobras and gone heads up with late model Vettes, so 5 Series (or any BMW/Benz) don't scare me too easily. In fact, most people I take out are really shocked at what has happened to them. I'm sure in the end, those High end BMW's/Benz would pull through, but they'd have a seriously hard time trying to lose me. I have a lot a faith in the M45. It has not let me down!!!

Oh yeah, I ended up cutting the lower cover off with my pocket knife since I didn't have the right tools. Will I put a new one back on? You bet. I saw the impact marks from whatever has hit it before. Have a good day everyone and thanks for all the info.
