Hi All,
my 2003 M45 is making a strange noise when the AC unit is on. The noise is strictly coming from under the glove box. It sounds like a fan or motor in there rattling loudly on with the AC on. Any ideas? How do I remove the cover located under the glove box?

I know you said it happens with the AC on, but do you mean the noise is present any time the system (to mean fan) comes on? And it gets louder with higher fan speed settings?

If yes, then the bearings for your blower motor (the squirrel cage) are shot. The remedy is to replace the blower motor.

That lower panel hinges at the firewall, but is held by metal push clips right at the glovebox. Pull it down at that point and you'll see the white blower motor with a black rectangular module at the bottom of it.
- one electric plug qnd 3 screws is all it takes for most Nissans... or whatever the FSM says.

Yes Sir, any time I turn on the AC (fan) the noise comes on and gets louder and faster with higher fan settings. Just so I understand, I don't have to remove the glove box to get to the blower motor? I can just remove the panel from under the glove box?

Thanks!

Maybe leaves got into the fan area? Is that possible?

Very possible leaves got in there. When I replaced the in cabin air filter a few months ago I did have some leaves on the filter.

To be honest, I haven't personally removed the blower motor on a y34. I just recall pulling the panel years ago to see what was there and it looked pretty accessible.
... but the FSM says you need to remove the glovebox, so....they make the car, they write the manual :werd:

On leaves, as long as your in-cabin filter is intact, then the likelihood of them making it to the blower is little. And leaves and sticks eventually break down, if it sounds like a buzzing/humming/growling, then I'm still looking at those bearings.

Understood! Thanks a bunch for the input. I'll give an update once I replace that blower motor.

I realize this is old, I replaced the blower motor today I didn't have to remove the glove box, I don't have a cover under the passenger side dash so I just looked up under there and removed the electrical plug and the 3 screws it dropped out put the new one in replacing the screws and electrical plug.

Too bad it didn't solve the problem. I think my blower motor was going bad as it would occasionally growl, tapping it solved that issue, then 4 days ago it just never turned on.
