I had a 98 i30 which I loved, unfortunately some kid decided that red lights didn't apply to him and long story short, I need a new car. I am looking hard at a 2003 i35 sport in immaculate condition, and also at a 2003 g35 sedan. Any opinions? What type of performance mods (along the lines of the A32 y-pipe) are available? Which one is more reliable? I'm looking to pick up a car in the next couple of days so any opinions would be appreciated.

It comes down to what you want out of the car. The I35 is bigger and has a much nicer interior, but the G35 is quite a bit sportier and has a bigger performance aftermarket.

You should be able to find all the same kind of performance parts for the '03 I35 that were available for your '98.

The two cars should be comparable as far as reliability.

I personally would prefer the I35.

I happen to lean the opposite way, the G35 is actually close enough in interior size for me, plus it handles better, has better power, and isn't wrong wheel drive ...

I like them both. We have a 02 I35 sport and a 04 G35 coupe 6-speed. For room the I35 will be bigger than the g35 sedan. If your going for a sedan, how about a M35? They are pretty hot looking.

Definitely consider the M.

The 1st gen M is V8 only (oh, DARN. ) but should be pretty affordable after 4 years. The new M is still pretty far outside '03 used G price range, unfortunately.

Of course, if we're branching out that much, I should point out how INSANELY cheap used or older, still new-on-lot Q45s have gotten. You could get an '02 for right around $20k.

Okay, the difference in insurance between my Maxima and my G35 is that the G is $6. a month more. That's it.

The G35 is badass, and as stated before is rear wheel drive. There are a lot more aftermarket parts for them.

Even though they have the same engine, the G is faster, because it has a transmission, and not a transaxle.

The G is a lot smaller, and lighter. The G is a 350z with a backseat and better interior. It is a really sporty car.

Needless to say, I like having the G, much more than I liked my Maxima.

See, and that's what I mean by "it's all down to what you want out of the car."

I've driven both (drove Greg's G on the most amazing track in North America) and I'd STILL rather have an I35.For some of us, being a "really sporty car" isn't enough on it's own.Real back seat > G35 back seatHeadroom > G35 (even without a helmet on, my head brushes the ceiling in the G)Smaller and lighter is only better at the track, and even then only if it's your preference.I also think that the Maxima/I35 interior is a lot nicer than that of the V35 G.

So it isn't just down to "G is sportier so it wins." There's a lot more to consider, and if you're not only looking for a RWD sporty car, the I35 honestly does give the G35 a SERIOUS run for it's money.

Do you want to focus more on luxury or more on performance? If it's luxury, get the I35. If it's performance, get the G35. My personal recommendation would be to get the G35.

Uhmmm....Not necessarily. The 5th-gen maxima is lighter than all the G's by almost 200lbs for the '03-06G and 270-390lbs for the '07G. The 6th-gen is 32lbs heavier than the '03+G and somewhat lighter than the '07 as seen below:

The '03 G35 weighed in at 3,415lbs. The '07 G35 sedan weighs in at a hefty 3,497-3,704lbs.

The '02-04 Maxima weighed 3,224lbs and the current version weighs 3,447lbs (a pig)

Hence why some G owners have noticed 5th-gen Maximas and the 3,300lb Altima SE-R walking them at times (ask Greg about the "stock" SE-R that beat his butt in his G).
