Would you recommend a 2003 Infiniti G35 sedan with 171k miles

Depends on the price. At 171k it has seen a lot of miles. If it's a car that was modded and someone drove it hard, I wouldn't recommend it. If it's a daily driver that was well maintained, it may not be a bad purchase. Really depends on the car. Do you have more details?

How much are they asking? Private sale book price is less than $6k. Is it a stretch for your budget? Do you plan to drive a lot of miles? It's a great car, but at 171k miles, it's like buying a senior citizen. Some may be in great shape, but they are few and far between.
The engine is a solid platform, but the mileage scares me a little.

I did a price check for the mileage and a good price is between 4k and 5k. Yea I'm mostly going to drive to school which is right up the street from my house and work and maybe cruise around a bit. As far as the engine I think it's in good quality I don't think there is any mods on it.

No!

I traded in my previous 06G35 with 171796 miles due to the increasing cost of repairs.

Hope you have deep pockets for any needed repairs. You may end up sinking more money into a vehicle with that many miles than the vehicle is worth.

Good luck

I would definitely consider this solid advice. I have never had a car past 50k miles, so I wouldn't really know as well as someone who drove one the equivalent of circumnavigating the earth 7 times.

I've got some good experience with older cars so I'll offer my view point.

As with any used car, if you are considering it, make sure you have it inspected by a trusted mechanic or an official Infiniti dealer.

Generally there is always a risk with buying used, but there is money to be saved if you are lucky.

In my family we have 2 Toyotas passing 240,000 miles (2002 & 2007) and a Subaru around 225,000 miles (1995). The Toyotas are pretty much still on general maintenance... no surprise problems besides increased oil consumption (still a pretty cheap remedy as far as fixes go) that I can remember at all. The Subaru has a lot of rust and a couple CV joints have been replaced along with probably 6 wheel bearings and some suspension replacement. (spaced pretty evenly over the last 15 years). I personally have a 2004 G35 sedan that I purchased used @ 123,000 and is now @ 149,250 - absolutely no issues. Engine and transmissions in all 4 of these cars have been bulletproof.

In terms of specifics, there were probably a few repairs along the way I'm forgetting, but nothing huge. I guarantee these cars have saved more money than buying a new one after 175k or so. That said, this is all anecdotal evidence with 3/4 cars being purchased new (or basically new) and I certainly consider this to be abnormally lucky. We had a few other vehicles in the early 90s to early 2000s range that had to be ditched (some around 100,000 miles) due to reliability.

My personal opinion, even if it looks well maintained and everything checks out, $4000 would be my hard upper limit. If there are any signs of issues, walk away.
It's a gamble... if you think you can afford the risk, for what it's worth, it's a fun car to drive and looks pretty good too.

Good luck, Lars
