I searched these forums and found a few posts with similar issues but the responses were not very helpful.

Whether the car is cold or hot there is a very distinctive ticking/clicking sound when it idles. It comes from the engine but I can’t pinpoint the location. The ticking matches the RPM (RPM increases so does the ticking). At higher speeds the engine noise covers up the ticking but I’m pretty sure it’s still there. From past experience it sounds like a sticky lifter but I’ve changed oil twice using Rislone each time and even Seafoam’d it but the ticking is still there. The car seems to run just fine and we just took it on a 400 mile trip where it had no problems but the ticking sound concerns me.

Any ideas of what it could be?

TIA

Joe,

I just moved your post to the Infiniti Online Mechanic.

I'm fairly certain that the engine in your FX does not use lifters or "HLAs" like the earlier Nissan engines. In the newer engines, the valves must be manually adjusted. Makes it extra important to have good oil change habits. Is your engine out of warranty?

Welcome to NICO!

Bucket lifters on 2002 and newer, they must be reshimmed if you don't change oil every 90 days. When ever the noise gets objectionable, pay the 10-12 hours of labor.

What's this cost to fix?

So multiply the above hours by the hour rate or the place doing the repair.

Many junky shops just identify the worst case offenders and don't take the 30 minutes [x 24] to measure , select, order correct shim out of 32 sizes [thicknesses] available and restore clearences to brand new.........very few shops beat the abusive owner with a stick, nor do they stock him or her on the square for public ridicule and rotten tomatos.............since they depend on ignorant customers to send their children to college.

Check the fuel dampner... that usually causes the noise. use a long screw driver and listen to the fuel line.
