i look in the reservoir and it looks really turbulent, like a garden hose, from the return its not overflowing so the suction side must be taking in just as much, when i turn the wheel it sounds like a dolphin.

A couple things will cause that: A failing PS pump, or a leak somewhere allowing air into the system.

If you top it off, it should eliminate the air in the system. If the reservoir still sees turbulence, the pump is most likely toast.

thanks i was thinking the same PS pump. i do not see any fluid on the ground . i am using dexron ATF in the Altima, it's what i use in my 2002 Sentra so that should be ok? i read somewhere that most PS fluid is ATF w/o the red dye and a few less additive's. the reservoir is filled above the min level for cold fluid.

That fluid should be fine, but not for the reasons you had read - that's inaccurate info.

Double-check all your hoses, though. They harden and a leak on the return side could theoretically suck in air and not leak on the ground.

After 18 years it's probably past-due for new hoses anyway.
