I have an '03 Altima 2.5 and recently got a transmission flush, new spark plugs and an oil change. A few days after I got this service, my "Service Engine Soon" light came on (it stays on constantly). This is the first time the light has come on for me ever since I got the car in '04... I took it back to the mechanic that performed the service and they told me that the code my computer produced says there is a problem with the Crankshaft Position sensor (didn't tell me the actual code). They said they will have to charge me to dig a little deeper to see if my sensor does indeed need replaced... From what I have heard, it is very rare for one of these sensors to go bad and most of the time it is just the connection to the circuit board... Does anyone have any insight on this? Should I get a second reading from another mechanic? Also, could it have been something they did while doing my transmission flush and other services that has caused my light to come on? My car seems to be running fine and has been no noticable changes since the light came on... Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated!!

i got an 04, a couple months back there was a recall on the QR25DE engines. there was something loose or some bs like that. if you didnt get this taken cared of, you should, that might be your problem.

Whoever told you that is not common is full of s hit. Those go out all the damn time. There is actually a recall for those. They leak oil into the connector and cause it to screw up. Go to the dealer have them run service comm on your car to see if it needs the recall if not have them replace the cam, crank and vtc sensors. Trust me I fix these all the damn time. Even the ones not under the recall go out. THey can cause the car to cut off and/or not start. And the service(s) performed on your car would not have effected it. I'm a Nissan Mechanic you can trust me.

first off hello everyone. i just registered as soon as i saw this after googling oil in crankshaft position sensor 2003 altima.

frustration frustration and more frustration. Literally today i had the crankshaft position sensor changed by my mechanic and he informed me that the connection to it (plug?) had oil in it which is probably why for the past few months I've been going bonkers trying to figure out why my check engine light has been coming on. Initially on the highway the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) was the code given on my dash after reading it along with teh CPS (crankshaft position sensor). I contacted Nissan of North America and gave them my VIN#. They informed me that my car was NOT on the list for recalls for this. BS? maybe but ever since I've changed it, I haven't had any codes come on yet (knock on wood) but we will see how it goes, it's only day 1.

I just wanted to post this because I've read webpage after webpage of other frustrated drivers with the EXACT same problem as me. My local Nissan dealer wanted to run a diagnostic check on the car and replace any bad sensors for around 3-400$. I bought the CPS for about 50$ and had my mechanic install it for around $130. I suggest everyone take NISMO's advice and have them checked wherever. I'm keeping my receipt in case Nissan decides in the near future my car does become part of the affected vehicles. Until then be safe out there!

The crank sensors have been redesigned by Nissan to virtually eliminate past issues.
