Hi all, new here - just bought a 2003 6mt coupe w/ 20k mi that I love.

I am a little worried that when upshift or downshift into 5th gear at high rpm it grinds. If I take it easy and let the rpm's drop before shifting it is fine.

I read mentions on this forum of bad synchros on th '03s and the transmission was replaced bya a newer design with an improved clutch on '05, but I have not found any specific threads.

I'm planning on taking it into the dealer next week to check it out, but I fear they will give me the wear and tear item runaround. It seems to me that this should be covered under warranty.

Any others with this problem? - Thanks

Welcome aboard!

Wow, you got a LOW mileage Coupe!

Let us know what the dealer has to say, I'd be surprised if they send you away empty-handed.

The dealer is going to put in a new trans and new clutch free under warranty - hopefully the 05/06 type. I asked them to make sure it was the newer type so I don't have this same problem again. Interestingly, I found out my car had a new trans/clutch installed at 7,500mi for the exact same problem back in 2003. I'm assuming that when the trans was redesigned in 2005, they started using the new type for warranty replacements in the 03/04 cars.
